Name That Plant!

Yellow wildflower ID needed

Sorry, no pic, but I'll give as good a description as I can.

This plant stands about 4 feet tall, spreads out about 2.5 feet wide. 4-5 stems arise from a basel rosette, and begin branching fairly close to the ground. The flowers are a bright yellow, and tiny---about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch.The buds are shaped like little tiny foxglove buds, and the open flowersalso resemble foxglove. They're carried in pairs, one on each side of the square stem.

The leaves areelongated ovals, with some toothing. They vary in size, being about 3 inches long near the ground, and getting smaller as they go up the stem.

It was growing on the roadside in partial shade. If you can suggest some botanical names, I can Google images and see if I've got a match.

What part of the country are these growing? Books are separate for western and eastern US.

The first looks like a corydalis, but differs from my Corydalis lutea. The second is a puzzler. The foliage does not remind me of geranium nor does the shape of the bloom resemble Uvularia. How many petals? Are the leaves baaal? Can you describe the flower and leaves more fully?

It's a St. Johnswort for sure, however, that's the best I can do. Most of these are native but you will have to check with local experts on the pictured species. This plant is not the eurasian species that is used as an anti-depressant herb.

yes, it totally could be. This house had a well tended garden, but in the last couple years I think the owner had some health issues, and we all know how fast weed can take over. I was curious so I let it go, one of the few I did let go. I can't see the leaves at all, they are under the cover of the hosta, and I don't think they are very attractive. But, that particular yellow colored bloom and flower shape seems to look nice to me with the lupine. I'd like to try and emulate that look with something with nicer foliage. If anyone has any suggestions as to what my bloom with the lupine and resemble that sort of color and light, airy, flower, I'd love to hear them. Thank you linaria_gw!

Here's a page of links to resources for southeastern plants (although some of the links seem to be dead). A good basic wildflower book is Newcomb's Wildflowers, although it's for the northeast so you'll probably see things that aren't included. It's a good place to start, though. A good technical manual for the southeast is Weakley's Flora of the Southern and Southeastern States; it's out of print but you can download a pdf. It's not for beginners and it's not illustrated, but it's complete and you might find it helpful if you've already got an idea of what you're looking at. I've only used it for grasses. (Actually, other people might be interested in this - a hard copy of this book is probably over $100 (and it's out of print) but you can download a free pdf.)

It's growing in southern Middle Tn, and while it looks a lot like the False Foxglove, the flowers are TINY. Less than a quarter the size of the Aureolaria.

Just a wild guess because of the bloom time, Verbascum thapsus .

Not Linaria, but closer---this plant is taller than Linaria, and the flowers are smaller and spaced farther apart.

Not Verbascim thapsus either---this plant is totally UN-like V. thapsus.

I would just bet it is some sort of figwort (scrophularia). They have square stems, two lipped flowers looking like snaps or foxglove. Are the leaves opposite?
