Comments (4)Arak, I checked your pic in the gallery, and your Ficus definatly has scale.. The one scale is a big guy, so it's been keeping busy sucking away at your plant. You can start by scraping off as many as possible..if your Ficus is infested, you'll need to spray an insecticide to rid this bug, ASAP.. I use Fish Emulsion to prevent and rid scale..(these bugs are highly contageous) so inspect neighboring plants that sat nearest the Ficus. Fish Emulsion is actually used as an organic fertilizer, but it also rids scale. A woman in Fl who has a citrus nursery told me that's what they use on trees..I have an Olive tree that was loaded w/scale upon arrival, used the FE and they all died.. 1 capful of Fish Emulsion to a 16oz mister of water..Shake..then spray plant thoroughly..upper and lower leaves, stems, everywhere..It should do the trick. BTW, is your Ficus outside? You can also start out by hosing the tree using a sharp spray, (some bugs might drop) let air dry, then apply FE. One thing about FE..it has an odor, which lasts about 2 days..they now sell an odorless type... You can find FE on Ebay at great prices..My favorite is Canadian, but others work just as well. Good luck, Toni...See MoreAre these millipedes and how do I get rid of them?
Comments (36)Greetings to all ... Wow, this is an old post but always very relevant, right? Actually, I recently purchased 3 pre-potted plants: Bougainvillea, Pentas Plant, and a large Kale from a popular local farm. They were not pot-bound, so I did not repot them ... Just placed them in my yard. Little did I know all three had millipedes in the soil, and all three eventually died. It was when I uprooted the dead plants that I discovered the millipedes in the soil. Now I know to always repot anything I purchase from them. This soil is very rich in organic matter, so I saved it in a sealed clear plastic bag and solarized it to eliminate the millipedes. I'm not certain if the millipedes eventually feed on the roots of potted plants, but that appears to be where the issue was. The plants just dried out rather quickly. In fact, I placed a potted succulent on top of the soil of the Bougainvillea and it lost all its root system. At least that one can be easily rerooted. Millipedes may be beneficial in natural settings but not in potting soil and definitely not in houseplants. Diatomaceous Earth (food-grade DE) does not address the issue. You have to replace the soil ... Especially so if yours is a houseplant. Millipedes do not bite but most people are allergic to a substance they ooze, which causes itching and skin irritation....See MoreHow to get rid of slugs and snails
Comments (30)I tried the Natria slug bait (which uses iron phosphate like Sluggo but is cheaper). It seems to have worked or at least controlled the population. I don't see as many slugs and snails around as much in the evenings and mornings anymore. It's still a on-going control method but for now, the constant frustration of seeing some new damage every morning is over. Of course, that is also combined with the plants growing bigger and fuller, so I may not notice bits and pieces of damage here and there. However, I'm basing my conclusions on actually not seeing as many bait pieces (assuming they were eaten) and not seeing as many of slugs and snails, as opposed to seeing plant damage. This morning, I did saw some ants carrying the bait away, so at least I know they seem to play a part in the disappearing bait also....See Morejames_ny
