Your favorite mail order companies?

Have pond nearly finished. Filled with water and added some rocks. Now I am needing some plants, mostly marginals. Which mail order companies has the best plants and reputation of good customer service and will still ship this time of year?

I also need to know how to pot them up before adding to pond. I would love to know where to find some good DIY planters.

There is a pond store not to far from Ada they have plants if you are interested: Pondliner.com Â 7901 N Kickapoo, Shawnee, OK 74804 Â (866) 766-3548 also the Pick Of The Day on Mississippi there in Ada has a few water plants.

Other than them sending me the wrong lotus one year and then making me jump through alot of hoops to get the correct one without charging me, I have found William Trickers to be very good. I've ordered tropical lilies and lots of marginals from them, and they were in very good condition. They are located in PA.

In USDA 6 you can get away with fall planting of fully hardy kinds, this is the preferred time to plant whenever possible anyway. In fall plants are often taller, an entire growing season having just ended. But big tops in small pots are not preferable, if roots are circling and compacted these will have to be opened up to assure long-term success. Mauling roots in fall defeats part of the purpose of fall planting, as replacement roots from cut root ends will not appear until top growth starts in spring. If undisturbed root systems are installed (early enough) in fall, existing root tips then immediately push a considerable distance into the surrounding soil - immediately giving the new acquisition a good start. Plants installed during any other season will not get as good a grip on the ground until the first fall after planting, fall is the only time when the roots get to have all the fun - the rest of the year the energy budget is prioritized for other parts of the plant or the plant is basically sleeping (winter). Elongation of new roots formed in spring is minimal, the tops also being active at this time and taking their share of the available energy - which is at a low point because of winter having just taken place.

Just wanted you enablers to know that I have a mail order and daylily nursery right in my own backyard practically. Right here in SE Michigan, we have Hallson Gardens, near Jackson, in Cement City. They sell and send massive hostas (my first passion) but I was not interested in daylilies until this month, so I thank you again for all your recommendations but buying locally really gives me a boost. I just ordered a couple of Rose of Sharon's from Springhill's, but they aren't scheduled to ship for a couple more weeks. Those are considered Hardy Hibiscus though, aren't they? Anyway I can let you know how their service is when I get them.

I have a couple nurseries around here who have a small water garden section and I've gotten plants like Thalia, water canna, pickerill rush, and some others there........so check out a good nursery locally too.
Also, there's a plant exchange forum around here too.

I just ordered from dragonflyaquatics, they have free shipping on orders over $50. The plants are smaller than what you get at the garden centers but they are also have the price! Mine were all healthy and well packed!

Ebay is also good for water plants... I've ordered aquarium plants and have been happy.

I never would have thought of Ebay. I wonder if there are any plants that are banned in Oklahoma. You know how some plants can't be shipped to certain states.

Ok, I went and bought 3 plants today for pond. Tell me if I will regret it. The tags read:
1 Water Hyancinth
1 Colocasia "Elena"
1 Colocasia "Cranberry"

I also have some questions on care. The Colocasia came in little pots about 4" in diameter and about 6" tall. Should I repot them in a much larger pot? If so, how big a pot? Do you fertilize them and what do you use? Would clay soil from yard be okay? What about winter care? And with a few small goldfish and 2 baby koi how do you fertilize the water hyancinth without harming the fish?

I started out with goldfish and a few koi as they all got older I learn the goldfish breed like rabbits and the koi only spawn once or twice a summer. I didnt wont to over stock my pond I was constantly trying to fine homes for all the babies. I finally found homes for the older goldfish and now only keep koi. You can do a search on here and you will find a post telling you how to post your pix's. If I'm right you will need to upload your pix's to photobucket.com or one like it before you can post the pix here.

I have bought plants a couple of times mail order and was not happy - plants were small. Ebay was even worse - plants were mushy and beyond help. This year I bought really nice bog plants at Lowe's. They were $6-$7 and big and healthy. I was just there yesterday and they still have a decent selection.

I've bought a lot of plants from www.bonniesplants.com and always been very happy with the plants and baby koi.
