Fortuniana Root Stock for AZ

Hi,

I used to buy OGR's and hybrid teas from Pickering Nurseries in Canada when I lived in Southern Cal., budded on Fortuniana stock. It was perfect for hotter climates.

They have since abandoned fortuniana in favor of multiflora, which does better in colder climes.

Where can I find OGR's (blush noisette, for instance) on fortuniana?

I am new to the Phoenix area and am wondering if fortuniana is a must, or if multiflora would do all right, or if the strength of a rose plant here depends more on the type than the root stock.

Any thoughts are appreciated. :)

Multiflora rootstock is used predominantly in colder climates and some local rosarians have said roses on it putzed out after 3-4 years. I took my last one out this year after 7 years.

Dr Huey is the common rootstock for roses sold in this area. Neither good nor bad, it's just the rootstock most of the growers in CA and AZ use.

Fortuniana is a special-order rootstock and you can order from K&M or any of the other fine growers that use it. Some roses do better on fortuniana, namely Double Delight. All of my OGR's are own-root which is how I'd prefer most of my roses. No suckers, no virus and plenty of new canes.

If you can make it to the Mesa/East Valley Rose Society annual rose auction on Saturday, Feb 20, you'll find several roses offered on fortuniana and some OGR's. All sales benefit the MEVRS and the Rose Garden at Mesa Community College. Last year they had several HT's on fortuniana for as little as $17.00 each.

I really appreciate the support for the upcoming MEVRS auction. I am contacting different venders now and will ask for OGRs if they are available. WE will have roses from KW Roses, Cool Roses and K&M roses (all on Fort). We will have a list on the website soon and a number to call if would like to bid if you can not attend.

Hi Stross! I'm in San Antonio and certainly wish roses on fortuniana roots were available locally as that root stock does so well here. I have several roses on fortuniana from Cool Roses and from Muncy, another grower that is no longer in business. Several members of the San Antonio Rose Society do their own grafting into fortuniana and have given classes on the procedure at their meetings. So perhaps you could learn to graft your own. Not really. The thing that really brought this home to me was the year I was doing some late pruning on Alexandre Girault. For some reason that I don't currently remember, the long, cut off canes were left outside all winter. They were perfectly green in the spring, and it took several weeks for them to finally turn browns. Something that seems a remarkable difficult concept to get across is that 'freezing' at 25Â°F, 'freezing' at 10Â°F, and 'freezing' at -10Â°F are very, very different experiences for anything that is actually out in those temperatures. So the pots in my garage usually 'freeze' on and off during the winter. However, it's rare (I haven't seen it yet) for the garage to go below 25Â°F, and everything usually winters over fine.

Thanks Ron! I've been on K&M's website quite a few times, and always been scared off by the rootstock. I remember Ann, who lives near me, saying that it may make it here. I guess it would be like my Teas and Chinas: I can grow them, but I plant them in protected areas, and expect a fair amount of dieback. I think I'll contact K&M this spring and see what happens!
