There's no rule saying you can't mix vegetables and ornamentals in the same garden. Furthermore, some gardeners line out ornamentals in the vegetable garden while they bulk up or until space becomes available elsewhere. Providing each has sufficient space and ornamentals do not interfere with cultivation and harvesting there is no problem.

The roots would probably appreciate a light cover of soil, compost, or organic mulch add on top. Daylilies don't naturally grow exposed to air like this and while they may well survive, they won't be at their best.

hi That would be my guess also .many species in the family as well as hybrids I grow them in pots but outdoors Some will get around 3 feet tall but tend to be leggy. Gorgeous leaves but worlds ugliest flowers lol Always thought they were native to the neo tropics?? gary
