I just bought a house with a small (100 gallons or so) pond with what I hope is a functional pump and is full of algae. The pond has a float that works so it's full of water, but really dirty. How do I clean up the water and get rid of the algae?

The first thing to do is find out if you have any fish in the pond. If not, pull the pump and drain the pond. Service the pump and make sure it is in working order with the impeller moving freely. Make sure the electric is wired with a GFCI for safety. You don't mention a filter. You should have one. For a small pond you can go DIY or spend $15 or $20 for one. Shovel out the muck and if there are rocks on the bottom, get rid of them.Use caution with the shovel so you don't put a hole in the liner? Is the liner a rigid preform or is it EPDM? Don't use any detergents to clean the pond. It is deadly to most aquatic life. A broom and clean water flushes most gunk out. I would use a quart of Hydrogen Peroxide as a final rinse. Sun light is good, too. Now you can make some choices. Waterfall?Fountain? Plants? Fish? What do you want to do next? Sandy

the first thing I'd do is throw it away and enlarge the pool.lol. Small ponds are ridiculously hard to manage.
Would be a good size for a pondless waterfall or a fountain though Decide the function of the feature and then go from there?? You'll want to clean it out and start over anyway. gary

These tips are good, but don't address what I consider a major problem with fish ponds, and that is aesthetics. Too many people, homeowners and "professionals" alike, install ponds without understanding how to integrate it into the surounding landscape in a way that doesn't make it look ridiculous. It becomes an outdoor version of an aquarium, but often adds nothing to the landscape, serving more as a hobby than anything else. There is a pond forum here that has a lot of good information about the technical aspects of installing and maintaining a pond, as well as the aesthetic considerations, with fish or not. However, since the pond forum does not focus on design, you will find some very ugly ponds being showered with compliments, alongside some truly lovely creations. For those who will say that the pond is good if the ponder likes it, you're right, but it may still be butt-ugly to almost everyone else.

You do NOT need to remove your waterlilies and put them inside for winter in your climate. Not even tropical waterlilies and since yours are pink, they are likely hardies. You should divide and repot them every year though for best blooming though it sounds like they've done well without. Koi love to root around in plant pots. They do also nibble on plants. Many cannot keep waterlilies in koi ponds because they destroy them. I do have a ponding friend in LA who has had his neighbor return his turtle, found it in his pool. IF you have a neighbor with a turtle it could find your pond. Many don't give them a proper enclosure, thinking they won't leave but they do.

Hwarrick: So you also have toads that also reproduce in your pond? I have a ? that I can't figure out: the toads mate in the pond, then I have 100s (1000s!!?) of polliwogs in the water that develop bigger by the week but still with a tail & no legs. All of a sudden one morning: every one is GONE... where do they go? Not developed enough to jump out, the goldfish leave them alone & no snake or other critter could eat ALL of them just overnight?!! Now another batch of teeny ones again in the pond after the visit by the toad pairs. Any idea how they disappear just overnight... EVERY ONE of them?! No snakes or birds doing it I am quite sure as it happens just over night one night!

I think Ortho or Sunset publications available at most home improvement stores have a couple of suggestions on how to turn a small pond into a pondless water feature... just to piggyback on what Gary was saying.
