Continuing the 'Fall'

OK, seems opportune... how's about we all continue the slide into Autumn? I'm not nuts about the concept, but accept the inevitability.

I'm groovin' to WALTZ time, nowadays... 3/4 (and 6/8?). I tired of NPR, hit "scan" and it landed on the classical station and aT the beginning of Tchiachovsky's "Waltz of the Flowers"! I glided home, windows down, volume CRANKED, and noticed a line of contentedly spaced cars behind me, lol. I LOVE to waltz with the helpmeet... .

Waltz=GOOD. Kick back and GROOVE.

Chelone's post is crying for a follow up.

Fall indeed - more like a crash. We are expecting a low of 35 tonight! Many plants were moved this evening, a few frantic coleus cuttings were made, and I am wondering where all these plants will spend the winter because, gosh darn it, THEY GREW!

I'll have to try making jam out of Royalty next year. They are pretty mediocre for fresh eating. Since the problem is a lack of tartness/flavor, I had assumed that it would make even more boring jam. But, they are very productive and finish just before SWD starts to hit. Triple Crown are great, but the 2nd half gets hit by SWD for me. I'm not sure how it would be in Virginia (faster berries, and faster SWD?). I have a potted Marion, which gave me a handful of sweet flavorful berries. But, as it is fully trailing and thorny, I imagine it would be fairly high maintenance, similar to Boysenberry. Speaking of Boysenberry, I've had professionally made jams from it which were very good. I'd love to produce enough to make my own. When the spring is long and warm (2013, I think), they were great right off the bush, probably the best, extremely flavorful, berry I've had. But this past year they weren't all that good- pretty sour to eat fresh. They are also a lot of work to tie up (sharp thorns too), so I'm not sure how long I'll keep growing them.

Good morning all, Happy Autumn to everyone! Can you even believe it? Seems like yesterday it was spring and we were all planning all the summer festivities and here it is another summer gone. As Im looking out at the September gardens here I have to thank all my Idyll and Garden friends whove given me so much information and inspiration over the last four years. There never used to be this much interest in the fall gardens. Ive learned so much here not to mention making friends for life. One of my lifes many blessings. So speaking of friends, I so wish you all could have been here for the afternoon yesterday. We started in a bit of a rush because Dougs cars battery died at the grocery store and he was stuck there for the longest time and got home barely in time to mow the lawn. I was running late because he was running late and anyway I was just finishing getting my hair put up when Chelone arrived. Normally Id be in a froth to be running that late but, no worries, these friends just are so laid back and mellow, no problems. Everyone arrived within twenty minutes of each other and Les and Monique brought up my bargain urn which took several of us to decant from Les minivan. Here is a pic I love the egg and dart detailing around the rim. What a buy, $50. for this because the corner is broken off. Detailing on the sides Anyway, originally I was going to put this in the way back on a rock I have back there but Im thinking I want to keep this in the front of the house as its such a beautiful piece. After we got the urn out of the car we had a lovely, leisurely tour of the gardens. As Ive said before and Ill say again, there is nothing as enjoyable as sharing the gardens with other gardeners. The high points were the Charles Grimaldi and all the lovely fuchsias are putting on quite a show at the moment. I was able to get some ideas for the new shrub border and show everyone the new pieced, rock mowing strip I put in a month ago. While we were doing the garden touring Doug was making salad and opened some wine then caught up with us outside and brought us a beverage of choice. What a peach! After the tour we settled in on the patio for our al fresco dining event. We started with Dougs famous smoked salmon served with the diners choice of pickled ginger, sour cream with dill, capers or hot pepper jelly as a garnish. I dont know how he does it but it is seriously the best salmon Ive ever eaten. Saucy brought a lovely home made bean dip, and a brillian bruschetta, Yum, yum! Wendy made her splendid spinach/feta/lemon dip. (Recipes please ladies) and Les made his gustatory delight guacamole. So who needed dinner after those appetizers? Well, we persevered, took a short breather and did justice to the main course of a crisp, tossed salad, Chelone brought fresh tomato/basil/mozzarella salad, Doug prepared grilled, marinated zucchini and the piece de resistance supplied by Sue/Tom/Monique and Les, gigantic prawns, marinated in garlic, cilantro grilled to perfection. Monique took some pics of these brilliant edibles from the sea and I hope she shares them with you all today. They looked like little lobster tails on the platter. What a superb meal! Whoops, almost forgot the corn on the cob but maybe I was trying to because Im now the laughing stock of the group because I eat my corn one row at a time. So maybe Im a bit OCD. LOL After another breather to make room (yes indeed there were home made desserts as well) we had Moniques magnificent apple cake with warmed caramel/pecan sauce and Wendys wonderful chocolate org - sm. (She assures us that really is the name of this decadent dessert.) Ahhhhh.. I dont think I need to eat for at least two days now. LOL As I said hopefully Monique will post pics of the food selections. (However, she really could avoid posting that unfortunate photograph of me and Doug with our faces pressed into the screen door. ) OK Ill post this then read the Idylls as there are lots of comments I want to make. What Is a bubbler? Our water is incredibly alkaline. Good to know that vinegar can be used. Will probably make a great all around treatment for preventing Sodic soil conditions. Neem and clove are purported to have antifungal properties. Don't want to risk bringing any pathogens to its next pot with it. ive looked everywhere for pine bark fines. And what I've found is "natural reptile bedding" ingredients: 1/4-1/2 inch pieces of untreated Douglas fir , safe for animal consumption. This I applied as a mulch during the decline assuming the issue was moisture loss. It is coarse and smells lovely. Making the soil light and friable. Do you think this would work instead of orchid bark? all of the orchid barks available to me seem overly composted and I generally don't use them as mulch without washing away their fine particles first. And for orchids it takes multiple washes to get a medium that drains clean without muddy build up at the bottom of the pot. Espoma Sulfur: 1 Tbs per 4 inches pot diameter: 14 inch pot- 3 Tbs Repeat in 60 day intervals: pH after 60 days was still too alkaline to be read without a 14 dollar digital meter. Because my original measurement was "7 or more" before and after. i grow hydrangea because I like the challenge. The romantic blossoms are mind bending and alien to my friends and neighbors. That's the thing about deserts, they're not the idea climate for anything, and Las Vegas is a homogenous monotony of laziness glorifying yucca, sage, rosemary, and Lantana. Hydrangea's Fussiness is what makes it so charming. The 1 year old rooted clone of this plant is thriving in a raised bed. So i know that stasis is achievable. Your experience and insight is valuable to me.

Well, I'm just waltzing in the door, carnitas tacos warming in the oven for me. DH on night shift. I drove home over the Vincent Thomas Bridge, lit up with blue lights, a passenger ship just passing underneath, escorted out by the port pilots, and knew DH was one of the tiny specks below on the pilot boat. Once home, youngest son disgorges contents of afternoon ethics class, which I love that it rattles him so. Job assignment today was taking down notes of the conversation between attorney and expert witness dermatologist in the doc's beachside home, not the usual sworn testimony. I think I've had three at-home assignments in eight years. Very nice home, filled to overflowing with "personal" touches, which my DH says we need more of. Spartan would describe my decorating style, no foolin' around.

I think Woody or Martie was asking about captioning, and yes, that's done with the steno machine. Every writer develops their own steno "dictionary" of strokes for words, prefixes, suffixes, which is kept on a computer and refined and added to endlessly. (Today I added "retinoid" RET/TPHOEUD, to the dict. and "inexterminable," amongst other words. It never ends.) The steno machine can be cabled to a laptop holding this dictionary, and the strokes from the steno machine are translated against the dictionary on the laptop, providing instant English translation. I always carry a laptop to every job so I can see the translation and read back from the monitor when asked. Depending on how skilled the writer is, how comprehensive the dictionary is, and how difficult the material is, you can either get a flawless translation or a translation with the occasional gobbledeygook you see on tv. Captioning requires the creme of the crop writers but doesn't pay as much as it should for the level of skill required, so a lot of incompetence sneaks in. Plus, it's just amazingly difficult to do. I'd be lost captioning a basketball game, for example.

That's probably clear as mud, lol.

I'm frantically working to get all tropicals inside before a predicted low of 38 tonight with one hand and tending to a 2 year old with the other. No time to talk.

It was a brisk 36 degrees this morning. Last night we covered the tomatoes with a lovely collection of Sesame Street and Disney bedsheets, and today's plans include oven-drying some tomatoes. The extra oven heat will be useful!

Eden, did you pick up a bag of succulent potting soil for me while you were out?

I will try to get more batteries today and get some photos up later today.

Denise, I loved your work attire on the last thread! I was on a cruise a few years ago that left from the Port of Long Beach, and my what a busy harbor that is! Our timing coincided with the start of the war in Iraq, and there were lots of Coast Guard people in small boats keeping watch. I think I saw your DH on one of the pilot boats. ;0

The underwear crisis has passed, but there is still a lot of laundry to be dealt with (DH is good about cycling it through the washer and dryer but falls down when it comes to the next step.) When it gets over 40, I'll go gather tomatoes. I have my standards, you know...

Yep, it says frost for tonight. So while DH goes to practice skating in prep for hockey's starting on Tuesday, I'll be hauling pots and taking cuttings. Sigh...so early!

I was astonished this morning that the "Awake" people who come to our door every month asked DH if we actually read their pamphlets and wondered if they should bother returning. He suggested a long leave of absence. Interesting change in their practices...

I've decided that the first week without Charlotte will be the hardest. Each day there is something that she did that appears as a reminder. Today it is the trip to the dump where she was regularly given a cookie. Last night at French Club everyone asked about her....Sigh. I think the cats are somewhat confused about Charlotte's bed. Usually they are chased off it but now they are permitted to sniff it and sleep there. I pitched her old water bowl, with a tear in my eye.

We are off to collect a new colour cartridge for our printer. I want to make a picture booklet for Skyler of his summer holiday here. Sarah phoned to talk about Charlotte and will need to explain to Skyler about her being put down. A tough lesson.

I've enjoyed the clouds lately. They are so beautiful, even though they often appear to be snow clouds!
