New Pond - ideas for landscaping

Yes I got a new Aquascape pond. I hope I don't have problems with it as I want to put few goldfish and plants in it. No Koi's for me.

Was wondering if you all could help me with palnting suggestions. I was going to do a dwarf weeping Maple in front and a dwarf blue spruce at the back with Japanese Hakone grass around wit annual flowers

How nice that you have a pond! I wish my pond was finished. I, myself am leaning towards a Japanese feel when my pond is finished.

I like the sound of the plants you have so far, almost Japanese garden like.

Just need a bit more info.
Do you have a specific look or feel that you want to the area?
It is hard to tell from the pic, but it looks like there is a couple of tree branches in the lower right corner of your picture, so my question is, do you have a large shade tree near by that will be shading the area? That will determine what kind of plants will do well near your pond (and as far as suggestions go for plants from us.)

No the tree is far off. It gets 6-8 hours of sunlight.

I see there is a public sidewalk so your guests will be fine. Good question about a walk to the driveway - will you need that? If so, that could anchor/shape your plan on that side. I think the question that is pestering me is whether this house needs foundation planting at all. And if so, if whether roses (if those are the roses photoshopped in there) perform this function well. Only under that arched window is it clear to me that a plant would be a good thing. Other than that, I might consider pulling the beds away from the house. Sometimes it helps to think instead of what lawn shape you want. You sound as if you change houses often. If you plan a resale, then uninspired is fine. If you plan to be here a while, then at least get plants you like... you can always move them around a bit. I agree a visit to a couple of local nurseries would be your best starting point. Finally, that tree is nice but might be a little close to the house. KarinL

Well, it appears that you have some slope there. Not Niagra Falls, but a slight slope. I have a 25 ft stream into a pond. I doubt my total drop is even two feet, but I have several little falls. I feel exactly as you regarding a natural look. I raised a slight slope over a significant area to create a little more height but my stream appears to come out of the ground rather than arising from a mountain. I have plenty of plants around and in the pond and stream. While there were obvious rock ringing the area at first, they became more or less hidden by the plants and added 'fallen' logs and weathered wood.

maybe just mix in a few shovel's worth of sand Sand needs to make up more than half of a planting soil before it starts to affect aeration and drainage. So to produce such effects the existing sand content of a soil has to be augmented with enough additional sand to end up with such a final percentage of sand. Otherwise amending of individual planting holes so that a pocket of different soil texture is created within a larger area can often have adverse effects on recently planted stock due to how movement of water into and out of the amended hole is affected by the involved textural differences. This can result in slowed growth, sometimes even failures. With this phenomenon not being generally noticed due to plants growing away normally once they have rooted beyond the amended hole, into the zone of unmodified soil around the hole that they should have been planted in direct contact with in the first place.

Loveflowers, you forgot to tell me the specific look you are going for? EX: Garden, woodland, japanese style, etc? Answering this will give us specific ideas on what to reccommend (for ex: Japanese Garden look is really very specialized...)

And from where your name is at the top of your question, (I am assuming that you are Zone 6? ) (Important to know for us to give advice.)
