Arthrum: good point, the temps in my house are only kept above 65 degrees, but it still seems that some temperature hardy plants still show dislike of my repotting... Dbarron: oh my! Sounds like a tragedy! I get upset enough when I break of a new shoot! Vtandrea: thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely try it on one of my oncidiums! Jane: I live in the Oakland hills in the SF Bay Area. I grow almost all my indoor orchids in the same spot, positioned around a fireplace to control the amount of light. The facing of the house isn't the best. 80% of the light is late morning to afternoon sun . 90% of the windows are west facing :( like the house... The problem might be I repotted at the wrong time. I didn't a lot of reporting in the winter/ late fall (whoops...)

Not soil ... orchid mix, usually a mix of sphagnum moss and bark. What type of orchid, though? I'm guessing a phalaenopsis, but it would be helpful to know for sure in giving advise ... if you're not sure, post a picture.

I won't recommend any orchid mix, because I believe orchids are adaptable enough that you can entice them to grow on, or in many mixes, or things. Its just much easier if you use something the plant is "happy" with. I try not to use pine bark in any potting mix, orchid or otherwise, but its almost impossible to find mixes that don't contain pine bark, without having to pay dearly for them. Old growth fir bark is probably the best all round primary ingredient in an orchid mix, but old growth bark is difficult to find also. The lumber industry declares fir trees mature at a much younger age now than it did years ago, so the bark is not as "old" as it once was. I know, bark sheds off trees from the outside, but there is something about bark from a 50+ year old fir tree that orchids just seem to prefer. That's my .02 cents worth, as a grower since about 1966, and I have grown orchids in some pretty strange places. Bill

S Rodriguez, To be perfectly honest, if this was your first orchid repotting, it is a commendable job. I think back to my first attempt, many years ago, and am embarrassed to say how botched up that attempt was. We don't know where you are located, but I might make a few comments. from your photos. The plant appears to be a bit dehydrated, which some times suggests that it is being grown inside. The bottom leaf that hags over the side of the pot looks a bit shriveled, and the leaf above i looks really small compared to the other leaves. The small leaf appears to be mature, so you probably won't get it to grow any more, but I would work at "plumping" the plant up a bit more. If you are in a warm climate, and have been growing the plant inside, try putting it outside in medium shade, and giving it a bit more water along with a balanced liquid fertilizer (5-5-5, 10-10-10) at half the recommended strength and half the frequency recommended on the container. The roots that show in your photos look really good, but I usually try to get as many roots covered with the mix as possible. This helps with moisture retention. You might consider putting a bit of extra potting mix in the top of the pot to keep those roots covered. None of this is given as criticism of anything you did in repotting this plant. You have done nothing that will cause this plant a problem in recovering from this potting job, its just some extra things you might consider in the learning process. And remember, the learning process will continue as long as you continue to grow orchids, Good job, and I would fully expect you to have a blooming Phal. some time this winter. Bill
