'The name's Bond . . . . James Bond'

The grandson who was supposed to go with me today to see Happy Feet came down with a bad cold so I went to see Casino Royale instead. And when the film was over, I thought, "Bond's back!" Daniel Craig is the best Bond since Connery. Rober Moore was bloody awful, Tim Dalton even worse, and Pierce Brosnan was fine with me though he played the role in such a droll fashion I was always sure his tongue was going to get stuck permanently in his cheek. But Craig is terrific. If I recall correctly, there was some controversy when Daniel Craig was chosen for the role because Adrian Paul got the most "votes" from folks hitting the "select" button on their computers as the cast was being assembled and folks were asked to select an actor for the role. But the people who make the movies apparently recognized that Craig has more acting chops than Paul, and the choice was a good one. He's not handsome, though he is certainly buff (grrrowlll!) and those blue eyes got a lot of camera time. He's not the same kind of sex icon that Connery was, but he'll certainly do. And did I say he is buff? No wonder there's a scene where he's nekkid.

The film opens with a chase, on foot, that had my adrenalin flowing like a tidal wave. If you suffer from vertigo, this one will have your stomach in knots. And the rest was, well, "Casino Royale" on electronic steroids. I was never the biggest Bond fan, have seen maybe half of them, but now that they have incorporated cell phones (probably the least sophisticated of the gadgets) and all kinds of electronic devices, the strategies and techniques are a wonderment.

No spoilers from me, but if you know Bond at all, you know that "over the top" is normal in this series. A good film when you don't want either "heavy" or "cartoons" but you do want to keep your imagination in full swing. I greatly enjoyed the film and the applause from the audience at the end indicated that I was not alone in my appreciation.
