Two pumps questions

My pump woes continue. My Sequence 750 4200 that leaks after shut down and restarted has a bent shaft. MDM sent the Canadian Co a new seal as they refuse to believe the shaft is bent and if it is they say that I dropped the pump. No I didn't but that big wad of filter floss last year probably didn't help. To make long story short MDM won't replace the pump so I may as well keep it. I am thinking of getting a second pump--the Sequel 750 4250 (about same flow as the Sequence) and running that pump on the sc/bd. My concern is if I run my old pump on the skimmer (Savio compact with 8" weir) will it draw down the skimmer too much? I currently have a ball valve off the skimmer line and one on the bd discharge. Can I valve back the input from the skimmer on the old pump? My intent is to run the skimmer/old pump to biofalls continuously as the pump only leaks when shut down and restarted. The flow on the pump according to the Canadian Co. is about 2/3 rd's of what it should be. With the two pumps I can keep the biofalls/skimmer going when doing water changes/clean on sc and have better flow on my waterfalls. I can change out the plumbing to have one pump on the skimmer/biofalls and one on the sc/second falls (which has a small biofilter 30 gal). Is there another way to plumb the skimmer to the old pump so that there isn't too much draw down? The other alternative is to buy one bigger new pump but the costs are about $200 more than using my old one and the Sequel pump. I know why would you buy when they don't honor the warranty--kinda caught between a rock and a hard place....

tedkat you may and I emphasize may achieve better floor to floor temp constancy with a two stg condenser running on low stage for longer run times. However, I believe floor to floor temp constancy is more a function of good insulation qualities and properly sized ductwork design both supplies and particularly adequate returns. IMO

A 16 SEER heat pump usually has one two-stage compressor. The first stage is usually 75% (approximately) of the rated tons. The second stage runs at the full compressor rating. Not sure about the 18 SEER Amana. The Trane XL19i has 2 separate compressors. The first compressor runs at 50% of the rated tonnage and the second compressor runs at the full rated tonnage. In this set-up, one or the other compressor is running (not both). Just because the heat pumps are rated at 16 or 18 SEER does not mean that the system is rated at that SEER. The matching air handler/furnace is critical in maintaining that SEER rating. An air handler/furnace can decrease SEER, increase SEER, or support the SEER rating. This is why it is important to know thw model numbers of both the condenser (outside unit) and air handler and a/c coil if there is a furnace involved. A heat pump with either a two-stage compressor or dual compressors has 2 stage cooling. If the same heat pump has auxillary heat in the air handler (back-up electric strips, gas furnace, etc), it has 3 stage heating. FYI, you don't necessarily reduce your utility bill with a 19 SEER as compared to a 14 SEER. The Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) determines your true operating costs, not SEER.

bus_driver and wreck: If this is a typical older 2 wire pump, they didn't include a ground wire in the drop to the pump. If it's newer they would have included a ground wire. I was assuming this was an older pump - and so the question would be, "Do I have to pull this pump and rewire?" My initial answer was "no" ( you would fix the ground when you replaced the pump). I'm re-thinking that answer. If the pump isn't grounded and you have changed the plumbing to PEX it is probably advisable to ground the pump and casing now rather than when you pull the pump for a replacement.

we have a trane two stage compressor. with the tam7 airhandler. we are in sw florida, if that helps. i believe american standard is a rebranded trane, but im not sure of that... we have no complaints. our home was a new build, four yesrs old extremely well insulated, great windows, obvioysly new and well sealed ductwork, in semi conditioned space. . we almost never have the second stage kick in... if you're not well insulated, at least you will probably only run in first stage in shoulder season, saving some power and short cycling. if you're in a high humiduty area as we are, you mught also consuder a whole house dehumidifier. we. can set the ac at 79 or 80, and feel very comfortable. reversible ceiling fans in all rooms but kitchen and dining.
