i see why they are there .. being invasive.. i would get rid of them ... but i would make it a multi year project ... starting at one end [or both ends] .. and planting something different ... while leaving the rest... to maintain some semblance of a screen ... and then.. each year.. removing another ... or just do it all at once.. and be done with it ... ken

Thanks all, I think Malus is probably correct. The clusters of leaves and flowers are more similar to crabapple than anything else. I got some more pictures in full bloom, below. The scent is amazing!

A thorough search will inform you that dish detergents are infamous for causing injury to plants. Dawn detergent, advertised as a super-duper grease buster is one of the worst. These products can destroy the cuticle, the protective waxy coating of the epidermal cells. The cuticle is a plant's first defense against the world, and has the task of keeping the good stuff in. Commercially manufactured insecticidal soaps are superior at killing soft bodied pests without harming the plant's protective layer. The next time that you have properly identified a plant pest such as spider mites, aphids, scale nymphs, etc., a real insecticidal soap might be the way to go. ID of the pest is important, though. I agree with others who have opined that the problems shown appear to be environmental. Watering with a cup of water every two or three days seems extremely excessive. We measure watering requirements by frequency not volume because a containerized plant should be drenched fully on each watering day. The frequency is dependent upon numerous factors. I have plants that are watered once every month or so in the winter, determined by what the potting medium feels like, for example. That this is a hardy, deciduous plant makes it extra susceptible to issues when brought inside. That was also faulty advice, absolutely. I think that I might have left it in the ground. Most plants do very well when cut back to the ground, bursting with new growth in the spring. Alternatively, since you did dig it up, it would probably have wintered nicely in an unheated garage with very infrequent watering. By the way, though summersweet does okay in moist outdoor soil, one always needs to be extremely careful when growing in containers.

I only have 'Cassini' (sold as Pink Marble) and don't shear it - I either leave it alone or prune it into a multi-trunked tree. No leaf spot. But I wonder if that is more a factor of my very dry summer climate? I don't see leaf spot on the sheared specimens in commercial plantings, either. And the Raphiolepis in those same commercial plantings is covered with leaf spot.
