I run into this. Its a matter of trying to mature the new pbulbs and hold on to the flowers. I opt for the flowers. What I found was if you bring the plant in after the heat is turned on you can lose many buds. Too much of an adjustment.

I have one which has two spikes budded, four spikes just starting. If I keep the plant in the house, the four new spikes might stall. The weather is going into the 30's tonight and I brought it in. It will stay in unless we get a steady warm-up. BTW, the budded spikes are from the newest canes. One is last years and the shorter is this years growth.

I'm bringing in at night and will probably move them back out when the weather warms. The new spikes need full sun and warmth to continue. I suspect the cool nights stopped the growth on the young growths.

That is exactily what I needed to know now I guess I watch the weather and hope it warms up some again.

Am I understanding what you said that a new growth from last year is now spiking?

If the new growth doesn't set spikes, the old growth may.

Last years growth has the two budded spikes in the photo. It also had two spikes last year. The problem is the newest growth(the green cane in front of the budded cane) is starting two spikes (see the arrows). Also, the two leafless canes in front are both starting spikes.

The dilemma is to save the budded spikes and get the flowers, but provide enough warmth and sun to allow those new beginning spikes to grow. This particular den is a 'blooming fool.' It sends out multiple spikes each year. I put it outside in May in full sun. Gets full sun all summer.

This behavior doesn't happen with all den/phals. I have a few which begin flowering in late summer and another which flowers in January and in May. These plants are easy to grow if you have the light. If they have to come in for winter before maturing their growths, I stick them under CFL's and try to get them finished.{{gwi:68476}}
This is last year and shows the newest growth with two spikes. That is the same growth which is budded this year.
The 'nightmare' dens, for me, are the nobiles. I'm careless about watering and mess up their cycle. I'm giving them one more year. No flowers, they go on the auction block.
