Secondhand smoke may cause cancer in pets, doctors say

tell me they are kidding-I guy can't even smoke in the doghouse now?

I would post my opinion on all the second-hand smoke scare stories, but I would be instantly lambasted and turned into a pariah, so--

no comment.

1. Sun. Everybody needs to get some sun exposure in order absorb enough vitamin D. This is a medical fact if you want to avoid serious osteoporosis. Don't overdo it but don't be afraid of it , and wear a good pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes. 2.The newest sprays are far less dangerous than the old ones and one uses a very little amount of them. We consume far more of the sane when we buy veggies and fruit in the supermarket than when we spray them in the garden in an entire year. This is also a fact. The most reliable chemist on the forum, Mark Rivers once posted and exact calculation about the proportion of propiconazole or tebucazonazole and alike used for food preservation as opposed to garden spraying of the same substances and the comparison was frightening; nevertheless I believe him without any doubt. 3. Although this debate comes up every year on the forum ad nauseam, needles to say, mostly people living in the west coast are the most judgmental (my utmost respect to the exceptions), since they live in a blessed climate and they lecturing those who live in less fortunate parts of the US while most of the rose breeders still hybridize modern roses in California. 4. Organics. Not all organics are good, some are straight deadly. Just think about Cyanide, Arsenic, Strychnine, Digitalis and so on. I think a much more complex, multifaceted and deeper approach is needed from the 'greenies". To repeat talking points is easy but that that does not make it true it just makes the repetition irritable. I say this despite the fact that because of my health I plant more and more no-spray roses, especially climbers. To avoid any misunderstanding, I am not worried about the hazard of the chemicals I used but I because my back problems I cannot carry the equipment I used to push-roll any longer. When I sprayed (and I still have to spray some roses) I use eye protection, chemical gloves and long sleeve blouse or sweater. We have to use use far more serious protection for the organic product, the winter spraying of lime sulfur; then we use a serious respirator. Isn't it ironic?

To have an actual fear of modern day cookware is absolutely ridiculous. Today, fear mongering lives on and on and on in our society......especially in the minds of so many under educated Eco-nuts. Teflon causes as much cancer in humans as does mother's breast milk. Better watch out for that aluminum too.....ooooooohhh. That aluminum bogey man is gonna get ya if big bad Teflon doesn't!! Wait around long enough and you will see Al Gore pushing some "green" pots and pans.......and people throwing out perfectly good cookware to buy his product. Dan Semper Fi-cus

Hi, Kay. Yes, she is going through all of the paperwork, and she is getting a bit overwhelmed. My dad left everything to her, and my sister-in-law, who is an accountant, is the executor of the will. She is doing most of the work, but they are waiting on the official death certificate before the house can be put in my mom's name. She can't sell until that is done. She also has to get rid of the car, since she doesn't drive, but one of my brothers needs a trade-in, and he is going to buy the car from her ( at a fair market price, of course). My dad did have his affairs in order, and all of the investments were in my mom's name anyhow, so she doesn't have too much to do. Right now she is slowly going through the house getting rid of things she won't need in an apartment. They lived in the same place for 44 years, so it's quite a big job, although in recent years they did begin to clear out a lot of junk. The biggest job is already done. My dad was into model trains, and had a huge set-up in two rooms in the basement. He had literally hundreds of cars, plus little villages, etc. He kept all of the boxes, but it still took us the better part of a week to dismantle the whole thing. The trains are going to be divided up between my brothers, and my mom didn't have to do a thing. We have been very fortunate that there have been absolutely NO arguements over money or disposing of posessions. I have heard so many stories about how a death in the family can bring out the absolute worst in people, but this is not the case for us. All of my brothers and I just want our mom to have as smooth a move as possible, and to end up with as much money as she can get. She is anxious to sell, she finds there are just too many memories in the house, and she wants a fresh start. Hopefully, she can be settled in her new place before the winter weather begins.

I don't see any crazy here ;) Radical? Why? Because we won't be led like sheep into our graves? Decisions made by WHO(M) for us, whether we like it or not? It is all MARKETING. The big vaccine hoopla - the meds - it is to make money for the STOCKHOLDERS ONLY. Be it by commercials on tv, or ads you see EVERYWHERE! MONEY MONEY to be made. To pay off the FDA, the AMA, etc. Trust me. Bush never required the gmo people to test before allowing. Neither is this president. So guess who is the guinea pig? YOU! guess what HIS family eats? ORGANIC. Just like mine. Gmo is in ALL corn *and corn is fed to cattle to make them fat! Soy. Unless it is organically grown and fermented just pass it up. CANOLA - who in their right mind would even touch this one? Soon to be rice - cotton - etc. There is NO stopping it. Problems are being seen and they are being hushed. We can NOT travel by air without molestation. We MUST obey to take a vaccine due to Health care? what? what if we are allergic? What if we give the disease now to someone else since we have been injected with it? Soon all of our rights will be taken, or so it seems. Be careful out there. Don't be so quick to believe what you are being told. There is google. There is research. They claim vaccines build up your immunity by giving you either the LIVE or DEAD virus? As a longtime Vet Tech, I have to say that, yes, secondhand smoke does effect your pets. Cats more than dogs. With a stethoscope I can hear a difference in the lungs of an older cat who has lived with heavy smokers and a cat that that has never been exposed to secondhand smoke. Also feline asthma is more common in cats that live in smoking households than in non-smoking households.

As far as dogs, I am sure it effects them too but not as noticeably.

As far as lambasting anybody, I would never do that [I am a smoker and can hear my lungs with the same stethoscope I am listening to my cats with!] but if you do have a pet with a breathing problem it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to tell your Vet you smoke.

Pete - You can smoke in the doghouse, just let your pup be somewhere else when you do it!!!!

Interesting. We had dogs at the gas station. I smoke, dad smoked 3 packs a day, neither dog had problems. At the house, mother smoked without inhaling, probably a pack or so a day. You'd think that one of her cats would have breathing problems but they never did.

I just took care of a patient who decided to quit smoking because he was concerned about the effects on his dog.

Guess he and his heart disease were less important than the dog.

Pete, if you'd stay out of the doghouse you wouldn't have to worry about these things. :-)

Asthma has a strong genetic component in humans; probably it's the same in other mammals.

To those of you thinking about controlling your drinking or giving AA a try and have been put off by the clouds of smoke billowing forth when ever anyone opens the door. We do have smoke free meetings.

I do not mind smoking a stogie once but not a second time around.

DW also has to smoke outside or in the basement during the dead of winter with the air filter going full blast.

I love a good cigar and like the smell of a pipe, but I sure hope those meetings are seafood/fish-free. (*wink*)
