I wouldn't hesitate to use it in your compost pile.

I have put the sludge from the bottom of my pond on my garden and grass several times. It seems to form such a tight cover that nothing grows through it. Why would this be?

I don't know why, but I would add some "browns" to the sludge to help break it up and not make a tight cover.
I'm kind of excited to see if the pond water and muck make a difference! It makes sense, people buy fish emulsion and all sorts of other junk for their gardens, why not do it organically? Nancy

When I cleaned out my plant filter, I put all the sludge in a nursery tree pot. I let it drain for a few weeks then dug it out with a shovel and transferred it into another large nursery tree pot. It broke up into some fine fertilizer.

Anything coming out of the pond - sludge, string algae, dead fish, pond plants leaves, goes right into the compost bin.

Is pond water good to water your plants (ground plants) with?

Sure, as long as you don't add salt for your fish.

Since muck is made of such fine particles, it tends to compact like clay. Adding it mixed with compost will prevent it from compacting. The best idea is to dry it so it can be crumbled first, but if you need to add moisture in your compost bin anyway, wet is good!

you ought to try old filter pads as a planting medium. lay it out, put your seeds on top and cover it with dirt. Even better if you are starting seedlings for transplanting into pots. Put it in a shallow tray, poke the seeds into it, cut it into sections with scissors when it's time to transplant.
Fantastic rooting medium.

We use our pond sludge from cleaning the filters in all our gardens and pots and shrubs. It's wonderful fertilizer, everything gets lush and green.
