Tree root removal advice

Hi All!

Well...I took your earlier suggestions. I ordered a 25x25 epdm liner from justliners.com Will be here this coming week. So, excited. Now for my question...with the hole being dug, we have a tree root right at the bottom heading straight up that we snagged with the backhoe. It's about an inch in diameter. Was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what to do with it. I was planning on digging deeper and sawing it off then replacing the dirt. Won't it continue to grow? What if I painted it after sawing it? Would it still tear up my pond? The next question I had...what does everyone use for underlining of the liner? I've heard old carpet or weed barrier. Would it be really better to use both of these? Lay the weed barrier first then carpet? Such decisions. I'm sorry for all the brain picking. I just really want to do this ONCE. All info greatly appreciated. And I love looking at all your beautiful ponds, such an inspiration!! Thank you!
