More from the Greenhouse
Comments (30)Hi, Whitecat. I *love* that I-Hsin Salmon. Beautiful! The other pictures of it (and descriptions) don't do it justice. Your picture shows it off beautifully. I really love the waxies, and that magenta lip it has is gorgeous. Fragrance is a big plus, and so rare in phals. I am definitely going to put that on my list. I think Big Leaf has one, hopefully will still have it when I accumulate some funds again :) No, I don't think any of the Byrd's crosses are that elusive waxy/shiny gold I'm looking for. At Bedford Orchids photo gallery, Border's Gold, Brother Elizabeth (url below) and Brother Victory two pages further on have it, but not for sale anywhere I've seen. I found one at Olympia orchids called Maraldee that looks right. About Byrd's -- tiny seedlings are just exciting to me. I like big in-spikes, of course. But the tinies are all promise, and all surprise. And with phals, you can bloom a lot of them within a year. I did get the cross Pat's picture shows, a couple of ice-white/greens (The Ho's Dreamy x ... crosses) and the Timothy Christopher crosses. I love T Christopher -- just beautiful multifloras, and very nice texture when crossed with any waxy. Besides, I wanted more practice with seedlings, so I can try a flask next year. PS I'm hoping to order some of the doritis crosses OrchidWeb offers this summer. No one else has anything like them. Here is a link that might be useful: Border's Gold, and Brother Elizabeth...See MoreUsing Bats to Combat Frog Pond Mosquitoes
Comments (5)We have bats here, as well as a pond, and farmland all around, which means irrigation canals and breeding grounds. With mosquito fish in the pond and bats in the air, we still have mosquitos, because they have to hatch somewhere. Bats are wonderful, helpful creatures, but there's no way they'd be able to do the job of keeping any (or ALL) of the blood suckers from your warm body if they so intend. :) You can also get the mosquito dunks, which won't hurt anything but future mosquitos. Not sure how many you'd have to get for that size pond, though. Brenda...See MoreHappy Rainy Monday!
Comments (17)Okay, I'm glad we are finally getting rain, honestly I am. But I don't understand why it has to make up for the previouis 3 months in 2 days! It has not even slowed down...no break at all...since it started Sunday night. I'm having a heck of a time getting my dogs to go outside long enough to take care of business. Potter will go out in a sprinkle, but not a downpour. Maks freaks over either one. That's Florida for you...it's either drought or monsoon. Never any middle ground! I have company coming tomorrow, and a nursery hopping day was what we had in mind. If something doesn't happen, that will have to be cancelled. Yeah, I know I'm complaining, but I could use some MODERATION around here. Going directly from burning up to drowning is frustrating. (Some of my plants are now beaten down pretty badly, so those particular ones aren't laughing.) *mutter, mumble, grumble* Trying to keep in mind that everything looks greener, and the water table needs replenishing. But why, oh why, does it have to be all at once? Of course, the temperature has fallen 20 degrees, and I have the windows all open again. That's nice. But still.... Marcia (wishing for a couple of hours 3 times a week instead of a deluge...there's no making me happy, is there!)...See MoreFrogs making me uncomfortable
Comments (36)Tree frogs - at least the ones around Missouri, we have green and gray ones - are way too small to have much edible leg meat! Not that I'd recommend that anyway. Just saying. I do love critters but they can get to be a pain and you start wishing you had some way to have fewer of them without murdering them all. Squirrels that eat the bird food, woodpeckers that attack the house, possums that burrow under the porch, etc. It's kind of like, as Tom Lehrer (the humorist and songwriter) said, being a Christian Scientist with appendicitis. :-D...See Morecatherinet
