Connie's roses and ?s

I took far too few pictures at Connie's open garden day when she so graciously opened her garden for a wonderful get together. I was too busy wandering around with my mouth hanging open or trying to learn all I could about OGRs from everyone. (Who all knew more than I did!)

The pictures I did take are blurry because I was so excited I forgot to change my camera setting to get clearer pictures. I could kick myself!

This rose reminds me of golden wings, but is such a beautiful pink color. Couldn't find a name tag, so please help me out. I have to have this rose!

DH fell hard for the only 2 others that we couldn't find the name tags for. There were so many of us talking that I couldn't bring myself to drag Connie away from her other guests to ask the names, so I will ask now.....

Connie, these were side-by-side just down from Double Delight. Please share their names. Both of them are beautiful and I want to add them to Alfred's wish list. After all, Father's Day is here!.....

I think these were both in the HT section of your display garden. If you don't have them ready to sell, please start me one of each as well as the 'Black Ice' that he fell in love with. And don't forget the pretty pink one above!

I AM NOT a HT grower. My love is reserved for OGRs, but if he gets hooked on roses, he will be happier while I'm spending so many $$$$s on roses if I buy a few for him!!

I am still very new at this, so I need ALL of the details I can get about these roses that will be coming here to live.

Can y'all help an addict out? :)

I could have just e-mailed her, but I wanted to share these with everyone as well as learn as much as possible about them. I'm in Central Va. ( I know, I know, Black Spot capitol of the world)

I've learned so much from the years of lurking here and want to take the time to thank you all for sharing beautiful pictures (not blurry like mine) of your roses and gardens as well as so much information on their individual habits and needs.

PS- Almost forgot... Does anyone have Rhode Island Red? What can you tell me about it's needs and habits?

Betty, it seems your husband fell hard for the man-bait here in the garden ... red roses and HTs. :)

Your first rose looks like Climbing Dainty Bess. That's probably Grandma's Yellow at its feet.

The other two roses are Elina (who is probably sitting on her label) and Mr. Lincoln (who I forgot to tag when I planted it last year). If your husband wants these, do what I did and order them this fall from Pickering or Palatine. Have them delivered in late March or early April.

Rhode Island Red is a gorgeous color, and it blooms modestly all season long. It's not the most vigorous of plants here, which would make it a good candidate for a smaller structure ... I think. As with any roses, sun, water, and fertilizer are the most pressing needs. I add fungicide to the list, to try to help my roses keep as many of their leaves as possible. (It's on my propagation list for next year's crop. I'll put you down for one.)

I'm glad everyone got to see the garden when they did, because the heat has fried most of the blooms that remained. In addition, the weeds are growing completely out of control ... and you have a recipe for the perfect summer mess in the rose garden. Most visitors see beyond the faults that bug me, and I'm glad. I want my garden to look its best when visitors come, and I guess this is the as good as it will get for a few weeks.

I had to laugh when you called them 'Man Bait'!! That's exactly what they are!

As soon as we hit the gate to your garden it was like a magnet! I was heading for the OGRs and he went straight for those HTs!! When we got back together and I asked what he found, he had me over taking pictures lickity-split!!

THEN...he disappears and comes back later raving about YET ANOTHER HT up in your HT garden around front 'Black Ice'!!!!

Oh well, I want that climbing Dainty Bess, so I guess we will be expanding to include some HTs. Maybe he will pamper those for me while I play with my OGRs.

Hi I am posting the pictures and I hope I do this right. I just wish I had taken more pictures at Connie's, but it started to rain. I know others took pictures so I hope more will post as I totaly forgot to take pictures of her fantastic front yard rose beds. Growlove, i live in north sioux city and i did a lot of research on buck roses and finally decided on prairie star and enchanted autumn both bucks from chamblees. They are both own root as i felt it was best to start with own as a first year gardener. They have been in the ground since the middle of april and both doing wonderful! Enchanted autumn has more than doubled in size already and has 8 buds ready to pop right now. I do not spray, only water on the leaves and they need no winter protection. I love both of them so far even though they are still very young. And they were in excellent shape when chamblees got them to me. I would LOVE to see your garden with all your hybird teas, i bet it is gorgeous! I would like to try my hand at just a few, since they need so much protection, which i would have to learn to do. Also, if you ever need any help in the garden, i would live to help in exchange for a rose or two and some advice. :) the photo is encjanted autumn bloom. Beautiful!

Katusha, I think all of us that chimed in were correct: that's just mature wood. You would probably have needed to take it out in the next couple of years to encourage new, more productive growth. You jumped the gun a bit, but I doubt you've done permanent damage. You haven't said where you live. If you're in a cold-winter area, you may lose any new growth the rose makes this summer/Fall. Don't worry too much, just be sure sure to remove any winter kill in the Spring, as is might cause canker that can spread down to the rootstock. If you're in an area with little to no freezing winter temps, you're probably in the clear, and a year ahead with any new canes that arise. Best of luck. And by the way, if in doubt, it's best to come here for advice BEFORE picking up the pruners, lol. John
