There's hope, Lellie. I've broken a several spikes both on oncids and on phals, and found them branching below the break within a very short time. They were ready to bloom, and determined to find a way.

Yours seems to be a dend, but I don't know why it wouldn't do the same thing.

You may have to build a cage to protect it, tho.

I caught a large green grasshopper chewing holes in a new leaf on one of my phals this summer. :(

Ahh I've had the same happen with a catt that started to bloom unexpectadly...except it was my most favouritist cat that chewed the spike!!!

That was horrible.

Maybe it'll realise the problem and throw another spike sooner? Sometimes I feel the orchids know things. Talk nice to him for a while. See how that goes, maybe if you ask nicely?

Yesterday I spotted a second spike below the chewed one!

Now I'll finally, after two years, see what this baby blooms like. :)

I moved the orchid...maybe it'll be safe...I hope.

You might be surprised and get another spike or two. If that new growth is mature, it should send out a spike from the center leaves. This type of den/phal can make multiple spikes. Keep the sun going!

I sat it in the sun for almost an hour today...just a little boost for it.
The spike(s) came out of an entirely new shoot.

This was the first spike that was eaten:

Can I correct this?

Very nice healthy plant! I'd not try to stake the spike yet. Let it get a bit taller, then gentlyyyyy stake it. I get much angrier at myself for breaking spikes, than I do at grasshoppers for eating them :(((

Post a pic when it blooms. I love my dends, they're mostly all spiking right now!

It's leaning toward the light, so get it outside in full sun. If it is outside, get it out of the shade. The spike will turn upward.

I also love these dens. I have such good luck with them, they help me get through my Catt depression.

The more sun, the more spikes, the more flowers. You can't lose with these plants!

Thanks Miss Jane...I have moved it out into full sun after acclimating.
Hopefully, the spike will rise to the occassion...LOL

Wow that was fast! All that growth from Sept 30? Amazing!! And it seems happy too (look at those little drops of honey dew). Are you sure it's a dend nobile? Looks like a biggibum hybrid to me, but I may be wrong

No...not certain its a Nobile.
Someone earlier on another forum ID'd it as such so I just took their word on it.
I reckon I might be able to tell once it blooms, right?

What are the physical differences anyway?

I'm pretty sure nobiles bloom along the canes instead of producing a spike at the top, but someone else can probably confirm. All my biggibums (aka phal-type dends) bloom from spikes at the top, like yours!

Looks to be an odnotioda or a odontoglossum oncidium hybrid
Either way Im So jealous. its looks perfect
