Name That Plant!

Three Misterious Baby Plants

Hello
I received these plants at a plant exchange. This first one, she told me what it is and I forgot, I think it started with a P and it is edible, we both had a taste, sort of like cilantro.

The other two are totally random, no labels, and no clue what they are. I am not sure how to care for them, and would like to keep them. The red one hasn't changed much since in my care, so I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong.

The 1st one is a Purslane. The red plant and the Purslane look like they are starving for fertilizer. The second plant looks like a Violet and another plant in the same pot.

Mary-the hibiscus you got from Lowes is tropical. You won't see the hardy hibiscus around here unless you mail order or start from seed. It's a whole different variety. They are exotic but no harder to keep alive than the ones from Lowes. In fact, I think the El Capitolo and maybe the hibiscus Schizopetalus might be easier than the ones from Lowes. They are simply hybrids, crosses of fancy different colors and bigger flowered varieties but shouldn't be any harder to grow than the average reds, yellows and pinks with smaller flowers.

Funny meeting you here bigthicketgardens! :) I love butterflies the best, but I still enjoy all of nature. The snake wasn't real long, probably about 3' - 4 long - I've seen these before, some that were bigger, and some that were smaller and blue! speckled with white. I feel sure that this is a speckled king snake, but I'm not sure at all about the little turtle. I've never seen a box turtle with red on its back like this baby, and it doesn't really match any of the pictures in my field guide - maybe I need more than one field guide. I'm happy to post pictures, Mary Ann - there's nothing I like better than making pictures of the wildlife I love so! Sherry

Sorry, I tried to type my question in the box but it kept disappearing with every word I typed. So I'll do this. Someone gave this to me about a year ago and I dont think it's ever been repotted. Still in the mossy stuff they put them in at the store. Will the mother plant keep living? It bloomed about 5 months ago, and the bloom stalk came out of the very center of the plant, and I didn't know if the mother plant would continue growing. Should I even worry about dividing this? What kind of potting medium does a Paph like?

I've been trying to find the solution for sev years :). and I look at undersides of leaves in bot gardens in Miami: I see the same spots too. they are outside all year. it can be cultural: some mineral missing ...but I have not found out yet which one.. however I had another 2 philos next to pthe plant with spots and they were ok. so it's not something that crawls. I had it on philo Xanadu the worst, and it seemed to spread to Philo subincisum and then to Philo Gloriosum, both of which are fast growers with large leaves. after 3 years of controlling it on Xanadu I got frustrated and chucked it. I noticed that the oldest leaves are effected the worst, the youngest are clean for some time. I rooted the tips by wrapping them in moist sphag in hopes that they will not get it. when I keep them tented and water minimally while they are very small they seem to be OK, but then it starts again slowly. I read that it can be bacterial and can only be controlled chemically. which is what nurseries do, but I don't want to use commercial products indoors for obvious reasons. I tried Azamax, which is a super concentrated Neem extract: It definitely reduces the spots to bearable, but you need to apply it again and again. they recommend keeping the effected plants on a drier and cooler side when it's bacterial. I read thru most common bacterial symptoms and none match. the plants grow vigorously and well despite the spotting. When I tent the humidity rises and I can keep them drier and water less. and then it helps, there is less 'dew spots' on underleaf. but there is still some. I tried spraying occasionally with soap and a bit of peroxide added: then they stop 'dewing' for like a 1-2 weeks.. I do get mites occasionally on subincisum, but it's different, though they can cause spots obviously and some dew too. My Philo 'Painted Lady' and 'Jose Buono' are clean and they never are bothered by mites. but they grow much slower and have tougher leaves. perhaps, some are not as susceptible to it? but if it's bacterial I would think that all of them would be? My P. gloriousum was clean for years, but started getting this spots 6mo ago. it's unsightly to say the least. I just hate it! That makes me think some mineral deficiency is causing it. I do feed them with fertilizer with trace minerals and with cal-mag supplement too. Aroids like that. and I flush too, though I grow most plants on self-watering wicks in the well draining light 'tropical mix' that I mix myself (you can get more info from my other posts: too lengthy to go into here). P. Xanadu outside in landscaping in Miami seem to all have it badly and P. subincisum too (the worst). But outside plants here are constantly under attack from various pests, even in botanical gardens. If you manage to get more info, please , post :).

When the first one makes flowers, you should be able to determine if it's Portulaca oleracea or P. umbraticola, both annuals. Looks like it could use more sun.

I've seen starved Lambs Quarters look like the red one.

As nel5397 says there is another plant in the pot with the violet. If you want to keep both I'd separate them. Although for most of us violets are a weedy species which self seeds rather too eagerly. I'm guessing it is the other plant which was intended as the exchange subject and the violet is a hitch-hiker.

i hate to say it...

but they are all common weeds in my garden ... edible or not ...

makes me wonder what the trade was ... did you give them some good weeds also???

Ken, that's the kind of nasty comment you should self-censor. This is a plant ID forum, not an outlet for your over-punctuated opinions and awful jokes that only you think are funny.

People pay for P. umbraticola (the other moss roses) and purslane (P. oleracea) is a common edible. Impossible to say which is pictured at this point. Most people consider them both desirable plants. Most people, globally, aren't US suburbanites who have been told edible plants are weeds to be poisoned.

The violets are also a native edible plant. I like them. I drove 2 hours to someone's house last fall to trade for some because I haven't seen any since moving here and I miss them. Flora may be right about it being the hitch-hiker though. People are told to hate violets, so most do.

If you know the ID of the 3rd one, we're all curious.

hey purp ...

if she was trading for edibles [of which she did not say so] ... then she got a great bargain ... i did not mean to question the new owners motives ... we all collect what makes us happy ...

if not.. then those provided are of questionable value ...

i dont know the names of the weeds i slaughter en masse.. in my garden ... and i dont eat from my garden .... but i have killed many of #3 ... and that is one of the reasons i hang around in this forum ... to learn ...

garn.. forgive me.. if you find value in what you received ... if you are happy.. i am happy ... i guess on some level ... i recall the days in the way back machine.. when i got trades ... that eventually.. i realized.. did not make me happy ...

Well I like the little red one, whatever it is. Right now it is cute, and I'd like to see it grow up. I really have no clue what it is. Since all these plants were free I have no complaints, I brought some seed to the exchange since I am a new gardener and have no plants to share.

These are not common weeds around my neighborhood. The only weeds I see are clover, dandelion, black berries and grasses.

I am just collecting at this point to try to bring some life into my yard. I am leaving heavily in the edible direction.

However It sure would be nice to actually get an ID for the little red guy. It doesn't look like any images I've seen for Lamb's Quarter, so I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Quinoa and Lambs Quarter are both Chenopodium species so it's not impossible. However, C album, Lamb's Quarters, is far more likely since it is incredibly common.

GarnFox27 - the red colouration of the little plant is almost certainly due to it's being starved of nutrients and moisture. Under such circumstances plants frequently produce atypical colour and growth and are much spindlier that healthy specimens. If you were to give it better conditions it would most probably change appearance.
