Name That Plant!

Pondside Plant - Planted By Birds/Wind?

This is a close up of the tips of a plant that grows at the back of my pond. Unbranched and feathery. It is about 1.5 feet tall. I thought it might be Field Equisetum but does not exhibit a rampant spread at all. Soil is neutral to alkaline, moist clay, half day morning sun. Hardy here in Zone 7b. Has never had any flowers of any type to date. I didn't plant it - it just showed up like many of the plants by the pond. Thanks. CT

It looks like Dog fennel to me.

Thanks Chris - most of the photos are right on the money except maybe the seedling stage. I don't recall them ever looking like that but always feathery. I'm going to keep them. They don't spread fast at all and the USDA site said they provide cover for small mammals and birds. Funny I have other Eupatorium (Joe Pye Weed) planted right behind them. Such diversity in form.

Awwww..so sorry to hear of this. That storm came through my yard too, and took one of my Bradford Pears down. It landed across my driveway, and luckily did not hit the house or our basketball goal. Gosh, it came through really fast. If you are not seeing them back at the house at all, then they have abandoned the nest. You don't need to wait the 2 weeks to remove the nest. Give it a few days, and when you are sure that they have abandoned, go ahead and remove the nest. Maybe they will build there again. There is still plenty of time.~~Angie

Yeah, you're right Tj. Not sure what I was thinking. I do however question the thought that these seeds are then passed through the digestive tract of said bird the way many fleshy fruits and their seeds are. It seems to me-and I have no proof-that when birds eat conifer seeds, it is the seed itself being consumed, not a pulpy or fleshy material surrounding the seed. As such, I do remain unconvinced that the distribution of such seeds is aided by birds in the least. I could revise my thinking if any bit of evidence was to be offered. Maybe they do exactly this-I don't know.

Turn over the leaf and see underneath if you see any insects. The other reason could be wind tearing up the leaves. Any windy days there?
