Name That Plant!

Need help with ID of odd plant

This plant has a slender, round stem, with opposite, toothed dentate(?) leaves.

It has a pink flower on the top, sort of like a hydrangea, but not!

It does well in partial shade in the central valley of CA.

That is a plant that has mutated due to a fungus or some other issue. The top left portion looks fasciated (look up "fasciation"). Here is a link that might be useful: Fasciation

Yes, it is a hebe, possibly 'Paula', although there are many cultivars with a similar appearance. All hebes have some degree of toxicity (as do the vast majority of plants) but it would not be one I'd worry about. But then no dog I have ever owned has grazed on any outdoor plants other than some grass and I grow a huge number of quite toxic plants if dogs were to bother to eat them..........they don't!! Once they are out of the puppy stage, I think they just know better.

I grow it. It tends to run ! The flowers are fragrant but the smell of the plant is odd.
