I've been whacking some of the monsters back lately. I found out the hard way that bigger isn't necessarily better.

Radiance had gotten way out of hand. I cut it back from about9 feet to 3 feet this spring. It looks better than it has in years. The fragrance is so good and strong.

Quietness is going to get the same 'whacking' later in the spring. It tried to lay down after the windy weather last Saturday.

Ooooooh, how did you get your Peggy Martin to look like that? Is that a thick rose trunk or a pillar?

I have a small PM baby that I want to train into a small tree, like yours.

The key word for me, Ingrid is 'small'. My allotment can be overwhelming (and here is where I bow in amazement at those of you with acres to care for). After a summer (ha) of rain, the weeds are appalling but, as long as I do not raise my nose higher than a foot, the careful and intense weeding (of a square metre)can be astonishingly satisfying - teasing out every single weedling, with a daisy grubber and trowel, I feel completely in control and what's more, it becomes totally apparent that a garden can always be brought back from the brink by doing a small job extremely well - as opposed to my normal MO of attempting to move mountains, rushing and skimping, bodging along with a maniacal sharpened hoe. And then, as a reward for industry, there is nothing nicer than to sit opposite my eldest son,with a large sheet of paper on the kitchen table, sorting and cleaning our seeds - I have a started a special collection of big seeds such as nasturtium, sweet peas and sunflower, ready for my grand-daughters baby fingers to poke in little pots and wait for the spark of life. I have to say, though Ingrid, it sounds like you did more than just a gentle primping about - digging daylilies in the heat sounds heroic....but so very virtuous and enjoyable, gazing upon the results of your labour. Glad to hear you are not being beaten down by the US weather. I hear you, Mendocino - I have fantasised about drip irrigation but always foundered at the prospect of directing water to the hundreds of pots of different sizes, with different needs - the continual rain this year has been a let off for me as by August, I am usually totally disheartened and fed up with the endless chore of watering (that sick pressured feeling when you can see your plants practically lying on the floor, wilting like a lettuce leaf on a tin roof. If all else fails, a good broom in the garden can be my most useful bit of kit.

I'm with Lynne..up early out on the screen porch with the cup of coffee watching things outdoors come alive. How the morning sun hits certain trees and you notice all the different colors of green. I also delight to finding a plant I know I haven't planted..that volunteer datura when I haven't had a datura for nearly 3 years. The lettuces that pop up all over the place because I dragged last years stalks to the compost pile. Indeed, tormenting amorous JB couples with a sharp flick of the finger. Not as satisfying as drowning them in detergent water but a much more personal attack.

Salvia greggii Navajo Rose and S. g. Navajo Pink are my hybrids, licensed by Ball Seed through PlantHaven. My records show Navajo Rose to be the one with the extra-wide lower lip and the white eye in the throat, and Navajo Pink to be the one with the dark calyxes. I checked some of the online images and I think the images have been switched, but there is not enough detail to tell for sure.

Thanks Kate, Signet & Nancy! Signet, it seems you and I are sharing identical weather and the same freak garden event. Doesn't it feel like Mother Nature has forgotten our corner of the world sometimes? We hear about heavy rain all over the country but darn if we can get a pitiful raindrop. The month of May here was one of the driest on record and so far June is no better. The other day we were supposed to get thunderstorms as a result of all the heavy rain from the South but nope......southern New England got some of it but it fizzled out before it reached my area. It just got cloudy and looked promising which just made it all the more frustrating. You're right; I doubt these are 'leftover' scapes. These are all my 'earlies' that are scaping so the order is right. None of my mids or later have any sign of scapes. Since I never get rebloom here (it's a rare event like the solar eclipse....or rain.....lol) I know it's not late rebloom scapes from last season. Just weirdness and your explanation might be plausible.

Hamp, your roses are truly awesome. Makes me wonder what is your rose growing secret?

I especially love Radiance. Very beautiful photo of her, too. I am fascinated with the light playing out in the shot.

Hamp, Radiance looks beautiful, one of my favorite Hybrid Teas. I love the fragrance.

That's a 4x4 post with a homemade wheel thingy on top that Peggy Martin is growing on. I just feed the long limber canes through the top and it drapes down. I don't know how long I'll be able to maintain it this way.

Ingrid I have somewhat less than 100 roses in my garden and most are less than 5 years old.

Masha, I use the open source software GIMP. For some reason some of my pictures have lots of noise off the camera so I denoise them. I guess that gives the softness. I also use the Orton effect sometimes but it can get a little dramatic.

Yep, Sally was the first. I saw it at a restaurant in McComb, Ms several years ago. It still had the tag on it so when I got home I looked it up. The first hit on google was Chamblee's. The rest is history.
