This was a great thread to read after having moved back in the summer - some very good advice. I was very conflicted about moving but I think it was clear to me that moving the garden wasn't going to happen. As it was I did take well over 100 perennials I potted up as they emerged in the spring (they were mostly splits of plants that really needed it). To be honest this was really too much...I spent a whole week moving car loads of plants before and after work and was already completely exhausted from moving the house. The new tenant at the place asked the landlord if she could contact me about the garden but in the end I said no. Of course a big part of me wanted to still be involved with that garden but I knew I needed to make a clean break and focus on my new garden. This fall I planted about 1300 bulbs and cant wait to see them if this winter ever ends.

BUT Mark's Starship is a tc sport while mine is an actual plant sport. ========>>> isnt there an FAQ dumbing down TC [ i put it that way cuz some dummy wrote it ..] .... i will sum it up they take a piece of meristem... which is like an artichoke... strip off all the leaves of the artichoke ... down to the meristem .... so they have the crown to start with .... and sterilize it to within an inch of its life .... so its still the same plant ... they then place that in some jello/agar which has hormones to release dormant buds .... a few weeks later they take it to a chamber and start slicing off little plantlets .... which are still the same plant ... now they have crown + leaves ... then they get a different jar with rooting hormone in the jello .... and grow some roots on all the pieces cut of ... and it is still the same plant ... and now a complete plant with roots, crown and leaves ... in a few more weeks.. when they all might be an inch big.. they move them to liner trays by the hundreds ... and they are still the same plant ... and there you have TC in a nutshell ... now.. because hosta are inherently unstable.. lets say for every hundred of the same plant ... out will pop the weirdo .. centered.. edged.. just different from momma ... and that is how a TC produced sport ... and .. IN THEORY .. would be no different than your sport .. if they look the same ... though in all reality .. only maturity.. and a DNA test is going to tell you if they are exactly the same ... you can divide or stomp your plant.. to start releasing the dormant buds.. to increase your odds of getting the little weirdos .... and eventually.. you will have 250,000 copies of momma .... and a good percentage of sports.. just like the TC guys ... i doubt your are thinking of registering it and putting it on the market.. but in all reality.. these TC guys have swamped the market with hundreds of look alikes.. because each lab names the same sport and takes it to market [God forbid they throw away something that they have this much invested in, even if it is a look alike] .. and frankly.. no one is going to bother to do the DNA to find out ... ergo presto.. a bunch of TC sports of something like striptease.. that all look familiar ... so in specific answer to your question... yes it is the same sport.. until someone else proves me wrong ... regardless ... it is a thrill to 'capture' your own.... you may resume having fun in your garden .. lesson over ken

Hi...there you are, Ken! nice to hear from you... LOL....actually, this is the same one I had on that 'blacktop' so I scared it into growing more pips, I guess!!!! It got the driveway threat alright! Yes, it is taped, no worries, Guru No, it wasn't outside...been changing water daily Did some research re FW sports but haven't reached conclusion re name...will wait until pips appear, or better still, until it comes up next year. You referring to anything relating to Tom Schmid as in same named hosta? Thanks for the thought and don't forget to let me know if you remember names. Well, it's 89F out there...here as of 8:30 ...was puttering around, ground watering hibiscus and a few potted hosta....can't stand humidity... You know, I've come to the conclusion that I won't have too many hosta in pots....worrying about them drying out, moving them around so they don't expire in the sun, etc,....it takes a certain kind of discipline....like potty training toddlers.....you have to train yourself to remember!!! I respect and admire all the 'potheads' and your diligence and commitment to your potted hosta. I'm not using the excuse (but its a good one) that I don't have space, which I don't....it's the intense heat/humidity that curtails my gardening for certain time segments throughout summer, much to my dismay and all tHat hand watering would kill my back. Speaking of sore back....reminds me when my family grew vegetables for a living for over 20 years. My Dad used to drive down to the Ontario Food Terminal around 4:30 a.m. With a full refrigerated truck or two of prime veggies. He also supplied various fresh food markets in Toronto. I remember being out there on the fields, rain or shine, hot or cold, freezing or frying in the sun, weeding, thinning, cutting, packing, pulling, bunching..crops such as radishes, kohlrabi, head lettuce, romaine, celery, cucumbers used for Willy's Pickles, carrots, onions, onions for seed (that was nasty and hot as plants were taller than we were and temps around 100) and other veggies I'm sure I've forgotten....I was used to being exposed to the elements. Now that I'm older I just can't tolerate it half as well. I've learned to accept it and that's saying a lot, considering my personality! I'm one of those pessimistically optimistic independent kinds and stubborn to boot....where there is a will, there's a way. Even though I am a new senior citizen, I am a youngish one and still have lots of zip, can run and play with my grand kids, am on no medication and am able to still lift, lug, dig etc. I consider myself among the fortunate .... maybe good genes have a play too. So bad back or not, I shouldn't complain. All this because of the weather...apologies but thanks for listening to me go on...lol There are a couple of cooler days coming...low 20's...good time to hunker down and git things done!! The thing is it is your baby! Nothing like your own babies. I put a FW in my bog increasing the water to constant water and it did not burn as bad. Might try a constant water reservoir pot and a lot of shade, I'm saying no direct sun. I don't really expect it not to burn but remember it is your baby. I think the burn comes from heat that is affected by the sun but it can still get very hot in the shade.
