Decided on veggie/bog filter.

With my extra dirt I'm going to go ahead and make a veggie/bog filter. The pond is about 8x8 average depth 2 feet, I'd say a total of about 600 gallons when you factor in plant shelves and bogs around the sides and in a corner and a built in bird bath area (courtesy of my 5-year-old son, easrly pond builder).

I was thinking about a 2.5' x 2.5' x 18 inches deep for the bog area to spill into the main pond, which would be about 70 gallons if all filled with water. Should I use pebble and plant directly into the pebble or put the plants into pots? I'd also use free floating plants such as hyacinth and duckweed, anacharis which I already have to the filter but would like to add some canna and maybe an elephant ear to keep it heavily planted. It would be easier to clean yearly if I had these in plants though but want the best benefit.

Any ideas for me?
