Baby Red Earred Slider escaping pond

I was given a pair of baby (a couple inches long, maybe, too small to sell) red earred sliders for my newly built pond. (I named them Sam and Ella - get it??) I was not too keen on having water turtles in the pond - eating the floaters, more occupants to muck up the filter - but I have since fallen for them. They have been in the pond for about 5 months.

Yesterday I found Sam OUT of the pond and several feet away. I realize they bask, but would this wee baby have the instincts to go back to the pond? How long could they survive out of water, as they feed in it? DH worries they will "dry up." Is that true?

Installing a barrier directly around the pond is out of the question. A turtle pond wasn't my intent, and would ruin the look we were going for. I do have a box turtle somewhere about the un-turtle-proofed but fenced yard for 4 years or more, so I reckon the perimeter of the property is secure.

Any RES experts out there?
