How And When???

i have A Blc. Campobello Mendenhall Orchid and i think it is putting out a sheath,cuz the new growth leaf has started to un fuse and expand and there is something in there. so i was wondering how does it form. do they form as the new growth is still emerging when the leaf it still fused closed? or do they form after the pb has already fully thickened and the leaf has fully expanded? im just so anxious because if it is blooms it will be my first encounter with this flower that i have bought into bloom all by my self!!! so exciting! but i still wont get my hopes up ;)

The sheath forms along with the leaves. You probably do have a sheath in there. I can't help you as far as what to expect and when, because I'm not much for hybrids, but hey, congrats on the first blooming!

For the record, and a quick lesson in orchid naming, your tag should read Blc. Campobello 'Mendenhall' HCC/AOS.

Blc. stands for Brassolaeliocattleya, which is a hybrid genus made up of the genera Brassavola, Lealia, and Cattleya.

Campobello is the grex name, which is the hybrid name given to all plants from the crossing of Blc. Chatanooga River x Blc. Golden Galleon.

'Mendenhall' is the clonal epithet, and should always appear in single quotes (''). This is a name given to a particular plant that the grower and/or any of a number of awarding bodies have deemed worthy of individual recognition. In this case...

HCC/AOS stands for High Class Certificate granted by the American Orchid Society. There are three basic flower quality awards granted by the AOS: Hcc, AM, and FCC. The awards are based on flower size and conformation based on comparasin to the parents and to other plants fromt eh grex. The High Class Certificate is granted to any plant who's flowers score a 75.0-79.5 on a 100 point scale, an Award of Merit (AM/AOS) is from 79.6-89.5, and a First Class Certificate (FCC) is from 89.6-100 points.

How and when to transplant flowers

I don’t know where you live, but daisies are about as tough as nails around here and need dividing anyway every three years or so. I wait until after the first frost and they have stopped blooming before I divide and transplant. Or you could wait until spring. Refreshing potting soil - how and when?

Like just about about other type of plant, you want to do this when the plant is dormant. So not now....better in late fall or very early spring before it buds out. I rarely upsize my pots and have never found the need to do much in the way of root pruning with clems. I also rarely remove any soil from the rootball but prefer to keep it intact as much as possible. When I do upsize, I just add some soil at the bottom of the container, place the existing rootball in and fill with more soil. Are sure the vine in question is a type 3? Those tend to be entirely be new wood bloomers and rarely bloom this early in the season...they are more the mid to late summer into fall flowering varieties. My type 3's don't even have buds showing now, let alone are flowering!! And they are usually continuous bloomers once they start, flowering until fall or cold weather sets in. No distinct flushes of bloom. What you describe sounds more like a type 2, which would indeed have finished its first flower flush about now. But the repotting/soil refreshing advice remains the same.

I usually let the tree decide..but I also think that thinning if you have the daring,is a good thing since the tree will make many stunted small fruit on a branch that should have no more than a handful at most. You might try thinning some branches and then compare with those not thinned later. Plus size matters,young tree's can give so much effort on too many fruit that it drains them of making it through an extra cold following winter. Larger Mangos in California can do both self thinning and give plenty of fruit. Its the smaller shrubby sized trees that probably could use the help.

The sheath is immature when the leaves first unfold. After a while (and I believe) after the pb has matured, the sheath starts to fatten up. Then fatter and fatter til it splits the sheath and the buds start to show. Right before the flowers open they start to drop from being straight upright to horizontal.

It does take some time for all this to happen, probably at least a couple of months.

It's lovely watching the sheath develop. Enjoy.
