Would Fish Have Survived?

After the ice melted off my pond I saw one of my comets laying on his side on the bottom. I had noticed him about a month ago looking the same way. I scooped him out and his breathing was very, very slow so I stuck him in the freezer to humanely euthanize him. Also on the bottom on his side was my baby shubunkin. I brought him inside and put him in a fishbowl. The next morning he was swimming around, looking healthy and eating. Now I am feeling guilty about the comet. Do the fish slow down so much that they lay on their side? I thought he might have been diseased? I have never seen any of my fish in the past do this.
