Good luck! I'm new to this forum, but I've been growing orchids for 19 years! They're wonderful and easy plants. The phalaenopsis and oncidium are the best for beginners in my opinion. For watering, I take my orchids over to my sink once a week and just hose them down. I do this in the morning to prevent rot. On the days I don't water, I do a very light mist in the morning. That way, they dry before the afternoon sun shows up. I strongly advise you to not use ice cubes to water them. ice water will shock the orchid. I also choose to keep mine indoors all year round as my own choice. You can find many good books about them on amazon.

As a beginner it is important to know that there are many different ways to grow the same orchid in the same climate and be successful.

As a beginner it is very helpful for at least a year to join an orchid society. The seniors of the society have answers to your questions better than most anyone else because their plants live in the same climate.

This sometimes takes a while to sink in but is important. In general, your orchids need to be planted on the potting medium, not in it. They are air plants. If some roots want out of the pot let it. It is normal.
