above ground pond
Comments (6)Thanks guys! Calamity, that's exactly what I want to do. Had originally planned the pond beside the garage digging down a foot so that part of the pond would be underground and insulated then raise the walls 2' above that, but it would not get 6 hours of sun a day, limiting my plants. So I decided to use a stock tank and move it to the patio/driveway and keep it 2' deep for the sun. I have a perfect place for it. Can't imagine with the weight distributed over the stock tank, it would crack the cement. Since I would drystack the retaining wall stones, it would be totally portable! I will use a capstone on the top to hidw the liner lip. Will either keep a pump running all winter or use a stocktank heater to keep a hole in the ice I had a little fountain pond for years made from 2x12's with a liner on top of a gravel base. I kept a pump running all winter and it never froze solid and I kept goldies in it year round and they were fine year after year. What kind of paving block did you use, Calamity, that allowed you to round the corners? Looks great!...See MoreStock Tank Pond- Pics
Comments (14)I totally agree, for such a small pond, I have gotten so much pleasure: watching birds splash around, the fish darting, and pond plants grow so fast too! I love sitting on my deck and just watching the pond. I was surprised that more people don't have the metal stock tank ponds, I guess they don't fit into every landscape though. I got my pond from Western Farm Center here in Santa Rosa, CA, which is just a farm supply center, anywhere you can buy livestock feed, chicken coops, or any other farm supply will most likely have stock tanks, but you may have to order the size you want, I did. Mine was $130 before tax, but it was definitely worth it. Digging is one of my absolute favorite blogs, even though I don't live in Texas, it's a great way to visit without having to deal with the heat, humidity, or mosquitos. Another one of my favorites is danger garden, she has an amazing eye for design and she has the same size stock tank as me, she actually has 11(!!) in total in her small Portland yard. Stock Tanks: They're not just for cows! Any way, I am so jealous of your pygmy purple trop. water lily, I really want a trop. too but they are so expensive! I think that's odd because they grow so darn fast. Really I want one of those Victoria amazonica water lilies, now I just need a bigger yard, heheh... But really though, I do want a trop, but I also want something with fragrance, really intense fragrance, and also dwarf, tall order, but if it's out there I WILL find it, Mwahaahhaaha!!! I don't know what color the flower is, because the friend who gave it to me had it in a tiny (1 ft tall, 2 ft wide) pond, so in all the years she had it, it never bloomed. No tags, either. So it will be a surprise, I will post pics when it blooms, and it will bloom, it better if it knows what's good for it. Comments (1)If you do not want to go to the expence, running cost and work of wrapping the drain tap/pipe with an electrical heat tracing cable and placing a good sized electric deicer in the stock tank, I would think it better to take the kit and kaboodle inside to your garage. The tracing cable would keep your drain outlet from splitting, but I'm sure that with one side being exposed and partially up out of the ground. That a bubbler may not be enough to keep a vent hole open and your tank would close right up with ice. So a stock tank heater may be required to do the job and they can be expensive to run. Comments (0)This is a picture of my above ground pond. The pond is covered by two tarps and the 100 gal stock tank with a spill way is also covered in the picture. The air temperature on the day this picture was taken was 10 degrees. I keep the 3600 ph pump running year round and the spill way never freezes. There is no ice what so ever on the pond under the tarps and we have had below 0 temps several time this winter. I rebuilt the pond last fall. My old above ground pond was a little smaller then this pond and was 14 years old and was made from railroad timbers. I built this new pond same location and used the same 100 gal stock tank spill way....See Morepondmaninal
