ID wanted for Purple Flowering Plant

Plant is 8" tall, 11" spread. Growing in a 12" clay pot outdoors in San Diego, Ca. Multiple branches seem to originate from a common central location below the surface of the dirt. 5-lobed purple star shaped flower; pointed tips curl backwards as the flower matures. Plant is a couple of years old and had been neglected, but survived. Thrived and flowered once replanted into the clay pot. Gets sun most of the day and daily watering by irrigation system. Not sure if this is considered an annual or perennial, but it's been here for a few years. Leaves are serrated at the edges, and a darker green. Flowers turn brown and paper-like after bloom. Would REALLY like to know what this is.
