What Hawaii Orchid Nursery is the best in Your Opinion?

Just curious... What Hawaii Orchid Nursery Is the best all around..? In Customer service,Web site services, Quality of plants,at the best prices. Also,of all the Hawaii nurseries that do U.S orchid shows..Who are the best or most popular overall? Thanks... I'm just asking because I value all of your experience, & Knowledge in dealing with these nurseries.

We deal with Maui Orchids and they are great!

Prices are good, quality of plants is really good, really nice people on customer service. We do all our ordering on-line (personal and wholesale), no problems at all. They even came to PR for one of our orchid shows.

I agree with ginnibug, diversity in leaves is what really makes the plants attractive since most of the year they don't have flowers. I have one of the miniatures where the entire plant is no more than an inch-and-a-half tall. Variety is Seiryujishi. But my problem is that although the plants grow very well here in north Florida, the hot summers tend to prevent it from blooming except just occasionally; my Neo falcata plants can go years between blooms.

what orchids are best for mounting?

Which Island are you on? I know there can be some fairly arid regions around there. As long as you have plenty of humidity then you should be able to mount any of the warm to hot growing ones and be happy. Alot depends on your rainfall and how much time you'll have for them. I would start with mini-catts and Tolumnias, they love mounting. Also you might look into Rodrigezias. Vandas aren't usually "mounted" but grow in baskets with out medium. There are many options and if you live in the more ideal regions you could grow many different types mounted there. Most Orchids grow "Mounted" in nature so if you conditions warrant then you can really keep busy trying new ones to see what does best for you

Never, NEVER order from Aloha Orchid Nursery. The Better Business Bureau says "this company has an unsatisfactory record. . . . Company failed to respond to the BBB to resolve or address the complaint issues. . . . Unpursuable - The company cannot be located or is out of business." Yet they're still selling stuff. My sister sent me "4 Blooming Dendrobium Orchid Plants" for my birthday. When I received them, they weren't blooming, and in fact two appeared to be dying. I called and spoke to Mahehalani. First she told me that there was absolutely no guarantee for orchid plants, even if they're already dying when they're mailed and further damaged by lousy packing. I told her the plants clearly weren't "blooming," and she claimed "budding" was the same thing. Realizing I was going nowhere fast, I pointed her to the "Tropical Flower Guarantee" on their website (http://www.alohaorchid.com/flower_guarantee.aspx) stating "We offer 100% unconditional guarantee on all of our tropical flowers." She claimed that this doesn't apply to orchids -- which are clearly tropical flowers -- and in fact ONLY applies to anthuriums, WHICH THEY NO LONGER SELL. Apparently, then, the guarantee doesn't apply to ANYTHING they sell. I emailed the sales department and they confirmed what Mahehalani said: that I was stuck with ugly, dying plants. Pretty citrus at a local Hawaii nursery

Evan, Cory, and Vladimir. I'd much rather have a Mexican one. Regarding the rainfall, I looked at a few websites and they weren't consistent with each other. Some said about 41 inches and one said 59 (this is not Hawaii-wide, but for my town only). Since my post yesterday, I've asked one more person. Here's what everyone here on the island has said. Customer service manager for wholesale distributor that supplies big box stores and local nurseries on the island: They don't even sell Mexican key limes. They only offer the best 3 lime varieties for our climate and the Mexican is too susceptible to viruses here. The photo attached is their top 3 recommended limes for the island. Manager at local nursery: For in ground, long-term, a Tahitian lime because it will last. If I *must* have a Mexican, I should get one and keep it in a pot since it is probably going to die in less than 3 years. The humidity will eventually kill it. I should not put it in the ground as it will be short lived. Owner of the local nursery where I got my Meyer lemon: They only have one Mexican lime, a 7 gal. When I asked about the rootstock, they said they they've had it for so long that they couldn't even find the paperwork to track down the rootstock. It just hasn't sold. Home Depot garden store worker: No, but we have a bunch of Tahitian limes over there. Wow, crazy, huh? I'm thinking about buying a Mexican for a container and a Tahitian for in-ground. I'd much rather have the Mexican in the ground, but I can't imagine having to replace it and take it out of the ground if it dies. I have a question: Should I only be buying grafted citrus trees? That is the general rule for mangos and avocados (fruit grown from seed are essentially junk) but I don't know if citrus is the same. I noticed that the trunk (on the pair of the Home Depot little variegated calomondins, pic above) was so skinny and I didn't see a graft line.

H&R, EOOM, and for shows, Kawamoto. I have also bought from Wilks Orchids for years, as well as Tropical Orchid Farm.

With the Hawaiian dealers, you have to be careful about checking their shipping costs before you order. Some can be very high for just a plant or two. I generally share orders with a few local society friends to cut down the shipping costs.

I will buy from Exotic Orchids of Maui again. The plants are very robust and I felt a great value.

EOoM has always been my fav and I've ordered from H&R and Kawamoto as well. EOoM has large robust plants and you usually get a freebie as well.

Now if they'd just have that darn free shipping sale!!

Carmela Orchids & Kawamoto are two of my favorites. My last order from Carmela contained two plants in bloom. A nice surprise and the buds/flowers did not blast. My plants from Carmela were very large and healthy. My bonus plant from Kawamoto bloomed before those purchased and all were/are healthy plants. Both places responded quickly to email questions and were supportive to a beginner. Both places pack well for shipping. Shipping is expensive but in Wisconsin I received my plants in just over 48 hours after they were shipped.

Carmela Orchids and Akatsuka have great plants on the big island. Kawamoto is a great place I think on Oahu. Exotic orchids on Maui are good too.

Curious as to why Hawaii?? Orchids are soooo easy to find Looking for something special.??
I always order on line and then have them bring to local shows. Saves shipping, get to see them before buying and know exactly what I'm paying for.
I haven't found anything in the catalogs that I can't get locally at much cheaper prices.
One catalog that has caught my interest is Andy's ,species are hard to locate. But that's in California.
Now palms,vireyas, or oddball epiphytes , another story lol gary

H&R sends some really nice plants to shows on the East coast. Too bad that the person accompanying the nice plants is a surly man. So bad-tempered that I kept my money in my wallet. Year after year, too. --Stitz

Unless it is particularly unusual you should be able to find everything on the North American continent for more reasonable prices than on the islands of Hawaii. But Komoda on Maui.... to die for Miltoniopsis!! Some masds as well. Ivan is great!!

I don't understand the comments about shipping being so high when you order from Hawaii. Granted I've only ordered from H&R and EOoM, but that cost was no higher than ordering from other places. I think the most I ever paid was $14 and that was for a huge box. Maybe some of the other nurseries charge more. Don't know.

In answer to garyfla's question about "Why Hawaii?" Maybe they have a perfect climate or something for growing some of these plants. Whatever the reason, I've received some of the largest plants ever from the two places I mentioned. One comes to mind - a Laelia briegeri from EOoM. That plant was at least 25 PBs and only $15. You will not find another place offering a plant that size for that little. Oh yes, then there was the Max. coccinea that was just too big for my grow area. I divided it into three, blooming sized plants and traded those away. Same goes for a Milt I ordered.

A lot of places from Hawaii charge a flat fee
EOoM - $25
Carmela - $30
H&R - Orders less than $50 - $18

While, Oak Hill:
$0-49 -- $12.00

Of course, there are valid reasons why the shipping is more expensive - yet, having to pay more than 20 dollars for shipping often stops me from ordering :( (or, worse: makes me order a whole lot more if it is a flat fee...hehe)
