Name That Plant!

Leaves smell like licorice...is not agastache

Hello

I'm sorry I don't have a picture of this plant, but I'll do my best to try to describe it. This plant has leaves that smell like licorice (maybe a little like root beer), but it IS NOT agastache. I know what agastache leaves look like and this is DEFINITELY not agastache. If you have any ideas as to what this is, please post them.

A more detailed description would help. Can you answer any of these:

Shape of leaf?
Alternate or opposite leaves?
Colour of leaves, flowers or stems?
Size of plant?
Where plant was seen?

Myrrhis odorata, Foeniculum vulgare, Sassafras albidum all have aromatic foliage.

Where are you? (you can add that under your profile under About Me.) I think how long-lived they are depends on the both the plant and the growing conditions. For me, Agastache rupestris is short-lived because years when we have either really cold temperatures without snow-cover or really cold wet springs, I lose mine. Mine are happy enough to reseed a few plants some years and they typically will return for 3-5 years before adverse conditions require replacement. Many of the western Agastaches that I have tried are annuals in my garden, and I will have to look into some of the hardier blue Agastaches to find one or more that are both happy in my wet early spring and don't reseed too much. Anyone in colder zones have suggestions?

I love my agastaches and have started all of them from seed - they are very easy to germinate and if I loose them over the winter I can always start more - they bloom first year from seed for me. The finches and humingbirds just love them which is the main reason I grow them. Blue Fortune is a washed out color but is a finch favorite so it will continue to have a place in my garden. Just today I started Agastache 'Sprite' again. I had really nice plants last summer but started more just in case it didn't overwinter. If it did then I have plants for our spring plant swap so it is a win-win for me ...... Lynne

Sounds like you have anise-hyssop, which is agastache foeniculum. Golden Jubilee is a variation of that. Unfortunately, it isn't hardy for me here in zone 5.

Just remember that herbal teas are medicines, and should be treated as such. I've not looked into A. rupestris, but A. foeniculum is mainly used for cold and flu symptoms. It is often used as a substitute for Anise, which gives you an idea of the strength of the flavour (since it is Anise which is mostly used to make commercial 'liquorice'). For my taste, a bit gutsy as a beverage, and a bit of a penance even when you're sick!

Perilla frutescens (Shiso), Anthriscus cerefolium (Chervil), Pimpinella anisum (Anise), Glycyrrhiza lepidota (American licorice) & some basils also all smell of licorice.

Oh goodness....The number of plants with aromatic foliage is staggering. Can you describe the plant, leaves, leaf arrangement, etc.?

For rootbeer flavorings, sassafras, wintergreen, sweet birch and more have all been used. Even some anise-flavors like anise and licorice.
