What kind of squash is this

My friend gave me this plant as a seedling and I'm trying to figure out what kind of plant it is. Its big enough now that its producing fruit. I think its some kind of squash but which one? How do I know when its time to harvest?

At first glance I see a pumpkin but as I think about it I need to know a little more. What size is the fruit? How long is the vine?

It is pumpkin-like but as a seedling it could be a cross of whatever squash was growing in that neighborhood.

Unless you meant the plant was grown from seed from a packet.

That the squash has already taken on color and the leaves are beginning to mildew is remarkably advanced for the season.

It could a spaghetti squash. I grow a "Small Wonder" Spaghetti squash that is smaller in size and looks a lot like that. I see its starting to change to a yellow color too. Maybe your seed package had a few foreigners in it. :)

Well, they are that color as soon as you can tell it's a baby squash! The yellow becomes a little more golden, but the green is just as dark! Sure wish I could figure this thing out!

Long Island Cheese pumpkin. And yes, very edible. You can use it the same way you would any type of pumpkin - pies, cakes, breads, soups, stews, etc.
