pond cleaning in zone 6a

I'm trying to fix the time when I get the pond cleaned so that the pond will look good May 30th (daughter's wedding).

Anyone from this area know when the apple trees blossom or when the maple trees drop their "helicopters"? I should know, but it's never been an issue.

I'd rather wait until these events are past, but I'm concerned about waiting too close to the wedding or I may have a huge algae bloom from the cleaning.

Any suggestions...except sit back and relax ;-)

Oh..my pump has a whine to it. I'm afraid that I'm losing bearings...can anything else go wrong?

Hi I'm in SW Ohio and you can be sure that those events will be a done deal by mid May actually April. So you have experienced a Algae bloom in the past after cleaning? How do you clean your pond, if I might ask?

I don't usually have a full cleaning. I'm just going by what I've read on here. I usually do get an algae bloom between when the water warms up and the lilies spread out.

This year I'm having the pond professionally cleaned with the pressure washer and such. When I clean, I just spend several days(actually a couple hours a day), wading around in hip boots with a pool net. Walking in pond stirs things up so that the filter and the pool net can the pick up the gunk from the bottom. I will have to clean my mechanical filter several times a day, when I'm doing this. I also pull out my plants and repot them, change a portion of the water and rinse off the material in my biological filter. The pond company will do all that and more for me this year. It will cost $60 per hour, but I hope to have most it done before they get here. I lost all my fish this year, so they don't have to spend time catching them.

Most people including myself do not have a lot of tree's to prune. I only have 2 peach tree,s to worry about, my other tree's are already shaped and do not need heavy pruning any more.I do have a few late freeze's in my area. I do prune my peach tree's the open center and shape them for a lot of sun penetration when they are young. When i buy a peach i usely cut the tree down to about 32 inches and then pick-out the new laterals branches.I descard all the flowers the first 2-3 years and continue shaping and cleaning the tree of small branches,tipping-off strong growing shoots during spring and summer. Then in the spring i usely wait till the last frost that(27 degrees and lower)to do the final pruning.When you have a lot of tree's to take care-off you might do it differently.I have other fruit tree,s to fall back on mostly no spray tree's like persimmon,paw-paw, citrus,asian pear and a few others. I believe in edible lanscaping so my tree,s has to look good too. I am working on a 10 year project to get my 21/2 acres out of 5acres in shape and this is on a slope. 3 more years then i am done.(hopefully)

Dumb question... What sort of fellow is your friend? Is he a "Grow stuff" sort of fellow - or not? In general - If your friend likes the idea of fruit but has never grown fruit, and you don't really know what he likes... and you REALLY want to get a fruit tree of some sort... Get him a Blueberry... Nearly zero maintenance, they don't get huge, don't make a giant mess, and the odds of getting good fruit are pretty high. On to the rest of my opinion... One thing to think about maintenance wise is dumping piles of junk on the ground that your buddy will have to attend to... Your friend may well end up cursing you each fall as they have to go pick up a ton of spiny, bug filled, staining, or stinky debris off the yard.... ESPECIALLY SO with Chestnuts - as a mature tree will dump THOUSANDS of spiny witches eggs on the ground... These are extraordinarily painful to touch - much less if you happen to step on one... Picking them up off the ground requires gloves! Personally... My opinion - don't gift a Chestnut unless your friend really wants a Chestnut and knows what he is in for... Walnuts produce BASEBALLS with THICK husks that drop all over the place - and their husks produce a ton of black, stinky, permanent staining goo that gets all over everything... Black walnuts are especially bad in this regard... Their leaves also stain EVERYTHING! In this regard - I would consider a Pecan before a walnut.. Mess wise - many "Large fruit" trees can make a big mess if you aren't committed to cleaning up after them.... Think of all he old Apple and Pear trees that folks cut down because they shower the yard annually with apple and pear slime.... More so with Mulberries and their Purple Stain! Thanks

I just ran down the basement to see what brand and it says 'ShopVac'. 14 gallon capacity. It is red and black. My neighbors gave it to me. It is on wheels and sits in a partial container (can't explain that too well). 10.5 amp motor. It has a long hose and there are small wedge attachments, brush attachments, etc. It shuts off when the holding tank is full and I unscrew a cap and all the water and leaves/gravel shoots out around my pond plantings. You have to be careful with it - it will suck up fish or frogs (not that I've done that) but it does have powerful suction. If my fish or frogs get nosy and try to swim near the suction tip I move it away. It is easy to move around the pond as it has a handle on top and I can pull it along on the wheels. My pond is approximately 8 x 10, about 19 to 21 inches deep. When I do a partial water change I take it down anywhere from 3 to 6 inches. I bought my Thalia a few years ago at Lowe's. It needs a really big pot as the plant itself is 3/4 feet or taller and the bloom stalks shoot up six feet. The flowers are purple and smell and look something like lilac. The bees like them. The base of the stems are reddish and the leaves sort of blue/green. You can buy Thalia at Lilypons (online). It is a native plant. There are tropical versions too, but mine is hardy as I leave it in my Zone 7 pond all winter. I'll search around for a photo of it. Here is a link that might be useful: ShopVac Link

I would get several of the same plants. Leave some outside, take some in for added protection or simulated cool temperatures in the fridge/basement. That's pretty much about the only way you can figure out if your climate (or even microclimate around your house) would tolerate some of these plants living outdoors year-round. I did that kind of thing for 1 whole year. Once I figured out what was hardy or not, I now knew that in the second and additional years, I could grow my collection more and more based on the amount of care they needed from me. As much as we all would love more CPs and even different varieties, we have to figure out our growing capability with regards to the weather, too, as well as our time involved to care for them.

do you have a UV light in you filter setup? If you dont get one it will prevent the after cleaning algae bloom. It will not hurt the bacteria in the pond. It kills the green algae suspended in the water.

I've been looking into a UV. I have a Savio skimmer that has a spot for one or two. Problem is that my pump has started making a loud high pitch sound. My pond guy says it is probably the bearings and I will need a new pump. That's expensive and in this economy, I'm afraid to dip into the savings too much. He said that there were some alternatives that are cheaper than the 4800gph Tsurumi pump that I have. He will give me 1/3 off. I don't know if I'm being jerked around or not...but that's another post.
