Anyone going to W.O.C. in Miami Next year?

Just wondering if anyone's planning to attend the World Orchid Conference in Miami? I heard it's going to be very expensive, admission $25-35.. Also parking in the hotel must be pretty expensive. But I guess I want to attend one WOC in my lifetime.Should be many vendors (75-100) with great lectures going on through out the week. Also I think they have another show going on in Miami at the same time. Not sure of the location? But I heard it's pretty good.... I think it's Motes that's putting it on..(the Greater Miami show- Taimiami) or something like that. Anyway's glad to hear your opinions on what you think of the admission fees & such....

Check the AOS site for admission prices. But my friend and I are going (from California) but we've already booked our flights and hotel months ago. That's what's going to be the important thing to book early. Hotels are booking up already for that week. Flights prices can go up if you don't book early. It should be a fantastic event. I'm especially looking forward to the vendors from overseas.

Went the last time it was held in Miami. Most dazzling show I've ever seen . Was worth the admission just to see so many species that are very rare or won't grow in this area. There is soooo much to look at you miss much of it I'm afraid. i did not attend any of the workshops or lectures either . I doubt I'll make it down there this time due to poverty lol. But it's going to be many years before it's held in the Us again . gary

Have not tried it with merit, but Silver Queen does ok as an F2. They are about the same vintage. Not exactly the same but it pass most folks inspection. In your area you should be able to get a September crop. I plow my early crop under and let volunteers go, if we get rain, I will get eating corn in September, not a whole lot but enough for my table.

cut back on the tomatoes also! :) Not enough room and they are too close together--the groundhog got some of the best looking ones just as they were ready to pick. I hope he moves on by next year. Nes--what tomatoes did you find did the best for you? What tomatoes are you keeping for next year? I gave up on cucumbers a few years back but tried them again this year--didn't do well again!!-what is it with me and cucumber?? :) Not sure I will waste space on them again :( I did plant and have success with some long asparagus beans--I only had a few seeds and something dug up about three of the vines, but did have about six vines produce and they were nice. I am saving seeds to plant more next year. a definite keeper--pepper fish that I got at the swap-one of the two seedlings I got survived and was so pretty in the garden--they have variegated leaves, and some of the peppers are variegated also--small--about two inches and very hot. trying to cut back on trying to have a huge variety of plants--will plant just a few tomatoes of a couple of varieties--and as far as perennials go--divide what is really doing well and spread it all over. fill in the blanks with some of my favourite annuals that have done really well this year and have saved a ton of seeds from--four varieties of marigolds, tall orange cosmos, malva-zebrina (planted mauritania and it grew big but no flowers so far!), melampodium (which I FINALLY got to grow and look beautiful :))-thanks Bev! :) probably other things but you know--I will change my mind at least once of twice before next year! LOL

May go early Saturday for a brief tour to see the new plant introductions. Don't like the present location in Building C. Access from MARTA is not as convenient and driving is not an option for me. The lectures are now conducted in a "fishbowl" on the floor of the venue, instead of in a seperate room and seating is now a fraction of what was previously provided. Will pass on those, don't plan on jostling for a seat this year, too old for that! Rb

thanks so much everyone! After a sweltering hot mother's day weekend I managed to get everything planted/sown out in the garden. Peppers, tomatillos, ground cherries, and eggplant, and basil got transplanted out finally. Cucumbers (both pickling and garden varieties), zucchini, beets, cilantro, beans, several annual vines, nasturtium,and peanuts. Most everything is up and growing now, except for the peanuts, which is kind of worrying. (wonder if the soil temp has anything to do with it?) I'm really excited to see how things grow and fill in. I took these pics while the water was on last Sunday morning. here's how it turned out. the front perennial flower/herb bed. I have, oregano, tarragon, a couple types of thyme, parsley, sage out there. The wire fence around it is temperarily in place to keep out a well meaning, but destructive, mastiff puppy. and yes you can see that the front arbor is not yet finished. that is no. 1 on the to do list when i get a chance. this is a view of the south side of the fence. I have forsythia, butterfly bush, heritage red raspberries, and black currants. all planted this spring. Lolauren- hope you didn't melt on mother's day weekend! i was down in tri cities and the temp in the car read 96*!!! you had asked about my sprinkler system. I really like it except for how touchy the sprinkler heads are. they plug/ stop spinning for no apparent reason. The coverage they offer though out weighs the periodic checking of every nozzle. In fact it may cover too well! (see the soaked soil) in the desert summer that definitely wont be too much though! I had to share a close up of my favorite pot I did this year. I've never done a succulent pot arrangement before, but I'm excited to see how it grows. the pot i found was a steal in my opinion. solid stained concrete for $120! I couldn't pass it up. as far as the blueberries go, every source i've looked up said that they will do ok without another variety. live and learn I guess. we'll see what they do for a few years before i pass judgment. anyone else have any pictures of their "finished" product?? or any picture of your progress?

If they had held it at the Miami Beach Convention Center as originally planned, I would probably have gone. I'll stick to the Redland show in May, which has more vendors and costs a heck of a lot less.

I'll be there, 2nd one in a row for me! I attended the last one in Miami, too--1984. It is worth all of the effort, a learning experience that can't be matched.

Don't assume that you'll be around for "eventually". They like to spread 'em out among the various continents.

Well, I'm not necessarily opposed to going overseas for the show...

Besides, class takes precedent over WOC. My pass classes. must make A's. Must get into good grad school!

CJM, when was the last time we met up at Redlands? You're young, you'll remember the year, LOL.

You going to drive, or fly? It's a pity; Mary Lou would have loved to see you again. She was a real big fan of yours.

I'm waiting for a WOC to be somewhere interesting, or at the very least, near a beach. Is there a schedule yet for where the following one will be. I'm not young and there aren't going to be many more to choose from for me.

I'll be there for the whole event. The only thing I will not attend is that special dinner off site that cost more then a fortune. I plan on going to a few talks and getting to know some of the vendors. I might even work for one of the vendors for a few hours a day. I've booked my flight and got into a place that is 1 mile away and providing a shuttle service. Besides, I figure I can walk a mile if I don't care to wait. I will however have a car in case I want to escape a little.

CJW: Gosh, it must've been 2001 or 2002! Definitely been a while... I can;t decide if I should fly or drive. I was thinking of flying, because I can just buy a ticket really early, but then i'd have to rent a car to get around,a nd that's just eating into the orchid budget. Also, I wouldn't have to deal with airport security or anything. Last time I went, I had my bag searched because I bought two kilo's of sphagnum and put it in the checked luggage. i got back to Texas and that bag was all jumbled. They probably thought it was marijuana....

I may drive. I like road trips. Last time I went to SoFla I drove. Well, three of us went a took driving shifts...

Not going, but sure looked at it last summer or early last fall. Even going w/ a friend, staying at the hotel (early bird prices, no speakers, no special dinner, and no rental car), and eating boring meals, it would have cost $750-$900 to be there for 2 nights and 3 days... before a penney was spent on orchids. The big unknown was air fare, and Northwest Airlines never contacted me w/ their special rates.

Just one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences I'm passing on, but w/ mixed feelings.

I didn't realize it was so soon I posted that before I checked the dates, ya same here I'll be getting back to classes. I am not allowed to miss any masters classes and I have to work as a grad assistant so no WOS for me. But hopefully I'll still be alive for the next one close enough.

I'm going. There's a garden club taking a chartered bus from my area so I'd be foolish to miss it.
