Nourishing, inexpensive food for a crowd
Comments (10)If you are having cornbread, a pasta salad is just another carb, though. So is a cake. If you have to make a choice between a pasta salad or dessert, you could incorporate something with fruit in it, and kill two birds with one stone and make it a more balanced choice. When faced with an identical situation for a church luncheon where I had to come up with salad servings for about 75 people I hiked it down to the local market who had a section of shelves with institutional sized foods and bought a couple huge cans of peach halves and a huge tub of cottage cheese and stuffed the pears with it. Laid them on a lettuce leaf and topped them with maraschino cherries. The church secretary had given me the wrong date for the luncheon, so I went directly to the local charity kitchen and dropped them off there. They were thrilled with them. They disappeared immediately. It was summer (hot) and they looked fancy (but were not), and I didn't have to really cook them (bought). And it added their servings of dairy protein, fruit and veggie. People on limited budgets or who must eat at places with limited budgets get enough processed flour. Sometimes it's nice to get something light. I also used to donate fresh organic farm eggs there by the dozen when the hens were laying heavily, also garden produce like tomatoes and green peppers. The cooks always said they appreciated that sort of stuff in summer, because the it was hard for the budget to stretch to fresh 'green' items....See MoreWater hyacinths - inexpensive source?
Comments (14)Last fall I threw some into a little pond that is spring fed, we have now turned it into a larger pond and I am in the process of changing it into my pretty pond. Anyway I am shocked after having a deep freeze of around 2 months, might be less but I am sure it felt that way, I am shocked to see that they are now growing again. I know we had below freezing temps for at least 6 weeks, day time highs above freezing for a couple more weeks but night time below freezing again. We are now coming out of it. I am such a happy camper as to not have to buy more this year. I have some in my basement and they are limping along but they don't all look to good. This is the before photo, the pond I had till my two pups decided to play in it and killed my liner. Now we have a house in the country and decided to use the spring pond for the goldfish and plants. Here we are digging it out. Thank goodness for big toys. I can't wait till all of the plants settle in and start blooming for me. Sandy...See MoreGood Online Source...??
Comments (9)I agree. They go to every show in FL it seems like. They come to our spring Botanical Garden festival here in Gainesville every March, but when they come, they never bring the GOOD STUFF. I always end up buying a lot more interesting and I might also say more INEXPENSIVE bromeliads from our local Bromeliad Soctiey than I do from them, and they don't bring a lot of the cool tropical stuff I know they could. I have been to South Florida sales before where they bring a much nicer, wider selection of stuff...but they tend to "slight" us up here. I have emailed them before and mentioned the fact that there are a lot of "out of zone" gardeners up here in No Central FL that grow in the house and greenhouse who would love to get some of their better stuff up here but it seems to fall on deaf ears. All in all though, I do usually buy from them on almost every Cargo Report and have also bought a lot from VIPP sales...See MoreLooking for Inexpensive baby KOI source
Comments (15)I'm looking for some small koi (2" to 3"). I just recently moved from Mass to Alabama and I had a koi pond in Mass and my whole family loved it. My 9 and 2 year old daughers would sit and talk and stare at the fish and it was amazing to see a 2 year old sit still for such a long time. It was great to see them enjoy the fish and my 9 year old enjoyed watching the fish grow, that is why I'm looking for small fish so the whole family can enjoy watching them grow. If anyone is selling any koi, nothing fancy for a reasonable price and is willing to ship or if anyone knows where I can order some fish for a reasonable price, I would greatly appreciate any info. Thank you......See MoreUser
