Fountains - Looking for a natural water treatment

I am searching for a natural algaecide for my small backyard fountain. I considered a spa algaecide, but it warned that it was toxic, so I left it at the checkout. I have hummingbirds that perch and drink from my fountain. I was hoping to find something safe to treat the water with, so I won't have to empty it and clean it out so often. Does anyone know of something natural that I can put in it? I worry that even a small amount of hydrogen peroxide might kill a tiny hummingbird. I also noted in one of the forums that copper pennies work. Do you think this might work and if so, how many pennies should I toss in? My little fountain is probably only 10-15 gallons.

Thanks! Melanie
