Mountains from Jasper to Banff

We had a wonderful drive to DH's conference in Banff. Here are some views along the way.

First some of the Indian Paint Brush blooms along the roads. They vary in color from red to pink to salmon to yellow. I'm told that sucking the stamens gives nourishment if you are stranded..a honey-like taste.

Marie, a triple WOW from me ! What exquisite photos-is there anyplace more spectacular that that area of Canada?-it's been many many years since I visited there, but it does stay with you. Fantastic ! Thanks for sharing these wonderful photos..

Great pictures! I only passed through Jasper once; what I most remember is the traffic being stopped several times on the Jasper-Banff highway by flocks of those sheep wandering out on the road. I didn't get to see any of the spectacular eroded rock formations that you posted there - or the horses in the fields. I would have enjoyed those, so thank you for the pictures!

So the goats in the first shot are the kind that have the legs on one side of their body shorter than on the other side, right? ;) It's such fun to see wildlife that's so different from what's around here. Esp. the bears. I really like bears; so very intelligent and so very misunderstood. We are seeing increases in their population around here, something that amazes me, but makes sense. More people means more opportunity for such expert foragers to capitalize on a new food source. As ususal "problems" with them are rarely their fault... it's the ignorance of the human population.

You are having a good trip!!! A road had been opened from Banff to a small lake ringed by peaks. This area is known as 10 peaks, the scene printed on Canadian bills of a certain denomination. I do not know if they still have it, but if they do, it is worth it. During late summer, one of the ski lifts is operational. You can take it to a ski lodge for an all you can eat breaktast and a fantastic view of the valley northward. The food is plentiful and hearty. One ticket covers the ride up and back on a chair lift including breakfast. It's well worth it. From Banff, consider taking the drive north to Jasper. It is very scenic and you will pass over a contiental divide. When in Jasper, do take a side trip out to Malign (sp?) Lake. Once there, you can buy a ticket for a boat trip to a small island that is probably the most photographed island in North America. Its image has appeared on many calendars. Do not arrive too late in the afternoon because the boat trip is about an hour or more and the oerators shut down by 4 or 5 pm, so the last trip leaves the dock around 3 pm. The views on that lake are fantastic. I did not take the boat when I was there, but if I am ever there again, I will plan to do so.

Tooooo funny. Loved all the pictures. Those no stuffing toys are the greatest. Our Kaicee has several of them and I no longer have to clean up mounds of stuffing all over the place. We ordered the first ones, then found more at Petsmart.

Beautiful, 'bug! Makes me yearn for a mountain vacation. It's been years since I've seen mountains, and I don't think DH ever has. I don't know what the low growing flowers are, but they are adorable! Thanks for posting the views...it felt like the temperature dropped 10 degress just looking at the snowy mountain-tops :)

But I will add that these are just gorgeous photos beautifully composed and the lighting on the poppies would probably cure seasonal affective disorder. Do run those by us again this winter.

Beautiful, isn't it? Some of you may remember we stayed at the Chateau Lake Louise on our ski vacation in 2005. Unfortunately that was the year my back took a dive and after ending up in the emergency room in Banff, I spent the rest of the week on crutches and Percoset. It was so disappointing to have to sit and look at that lake along with what appeared to be some great walking trails and not be able to go off exploring. Maybe next time...in the meantime thanks for sharing these!

Bug...the pictures are amazing! I'm so glad I finally had a chance to look in at them. Nature is just a wonder and you've captured it so well! The mountain views are just breathtaking! Love all the wildflowers. I remember when DH's dad lived in Colorado and I got there one spring just in time to see a field of Indian paintbrush...I was in awe!
