Vanda orchid
Comments (45)Hello Kate, I am too new to the vandas to give much advice but I do feel that when we buy from the nurserys here especially in the vases they are gasping for a drink if they have been there from the suppliers (usually Holland) for some time as the sales staff don't really know much and are just there to sell. I have frequently asked sales staff to water plants which look streesed from lack of water. Hopefully some one will advise you. I have discovered that filling the sink with lukewarm water and dunking the vandas for around 30 mins twicw a week has worked well and also kept the vases clean, I can also inspect the roots. I am pleased to say I have another vanda with a little flower spike coming ( vanda Thongchai X Dr.Anek). do hope it doesn't abort. Good luck and happy growing. Hazel....See MoreVanda query
Comments (4)Hi Hazel, I think it all depends on the parentage of the Vanda in question. I've included a link to "that other orchid forum" because someone there asked the very same question. The response was 3 to 5 years. I don't think the number of leaves have anything to do with determining the age of a Vanda. Vandas can drop leaves in less than desirable growing conditions and they can sit dormant without putting out new leaves for long periods of time also - most likely for the same reason. Here's a quote from The University of Georgia College of Agricultural & Environmental Science' web site. "Vandas may grow to be very large plants, sometimes 10 to 12 feet high, but they grow very slowly. A plant two feet tall may be seven or eight years old." Everything I've read on Vandas say that mature Vandas get way too big for orchid hobbiests. Do you think that you may have Vanda Ascocenda hybrids? They are smaller plants at maturity. Here's another quote "Ascocenda, the intergeneric hybrid between Vanda and Ascocentrum, a fancier may find vanda-shaped flowers borne on plants about half the size of Vanda plants. Additionally, ascocendas are free-flowering in the warm months and possess flower colors ranging from lavender and purple to fiery yellow, orange and red." If your Vandas didn't arrive in bloom or with evidence of previous spikes than it may be hard to know if it's "near blooming size" or "blooming size". I hope this helps. Comments (14)Sue, Vanda sanderiana is really an unusual vanda. Most vandas root all over the entire stem length and among the leaf axils and are very easy to root. Vanda sanderiana on the other hand, a strap-leaf (and some other strap-leaf vandas with vanda sanderiana in their lineage), tend to root exclusively only at the lowermost and oldest portions of the stem. There may be hope in the still living upper portion but then again, with vanda sanderiana, chances are extremely low even with a rooting hormone. There is better chance in a case of an infected vanda with a healthy root system and lower stem but an infected upper stem as the healthy root system and lower stem can still produce keikis so long as the infection at the upper part has not spread to the lower part. Ray, Your vanda's condition closely resembles mine. My vanda also has 20-24 inches or so of stem length but now only the upper 6-8 inches is still alive (I know this from bark 'stripping'). I've had a few of my vandas die this way (stem climbing fungus infection that originates at the lower stem/root portion) so I'm more aware of this condition now and stop them from progressing whenever I can. This type of infection has always spelled death to my strap-leaf vandas once it has started to spread upwards. ----- Thanks for your help, Sue and Ray. Will be waiting for the reply to your email, Ray. In the meantime, I think I'll decide to cut now and try to get the upper cut portion to root in a month's time. (Vanda cuttings normally would already root in one month's time.) If it doesn't root in one month, I'll attempt to graft it to another vanda (strap-leaf scion to a terete or semi-terete rootstock.) I'll let you know if I succeed in rooting it in a month (Aug 3). tropical...See MoreVanda Sanderiana alba
Comments (7)NICE!!! Very good color and form. For me, a very difficult plant to keep alive. Really resents repotting, but absolutely stunning when in bloom. My friend Romel, grows it superbly. His last bloom had 3 spikes and was the Grand Champion at the last Honolulu Orchid Society Show in Oct. It is the national flower of the Philippines and Romel is justly proud of his superb plant.
