Organic 'hot bed with no electric cables??

I really want to have access to my own fresh greens throughout the winter (NE Ohio). I realize we can have a hot bed heated by cables, etc. But I would like to do it without anything that requires power. Is it possible to keep the bed warm with just manure? I'm thinking of digging a large pit, around 3 ft deep, 3ft wide and 4ft long. Then filling it was fresh horse manure (mixed with sawdust bedding), and a little chicken litter. On top of that would be around 4 inches of garden soil, then cover would a wood frame, and plastic. Is it realistic that this would keep my greens growing well throughout the coldest of winter? I could also add some bails of hay around the edges for added insulation. Plus it is full sun and facing south.
