unknown red flower at 7000 ft.

I saw these red flowers growing in the shade of a pine tree at Big Bear Lake, California (approx. 7000 ft.)

There were 3 groups of 2 flowers each, I initially thought they may be cactus flowers with the cactus part buried by loose soil, but I dug about 3 inches down and it continued with a thick stem the same color. I have looked at many pictures in the web, but can't find anything like it. Somebody knows what they are?
