Can any one recommend a good camera for garden photography that costs less than $1,000? Something good for closeups, obviously, but also good in low light and with little or no shutter lag.

I wish I could help, but I'm not into photography in a big way. Just point and shoot with a digital camera. What is shutter lag?

There's nothing quite as cool-looking(temperaturewise) as BLUE flowers. I grew Phacelia a few years ago, best blue i ever saw, next to cornflowers. The bell-shaped blue flowers with icy-white anthers were beautiful, and stirred up images of cooler weather. They do have a short bloom time, hot weather just about stops the show, cutting back helps somewhat. Give 'em a try, i believe there are 2 or 3 varieties. Good luck, and enjoy.

If you are a film person try using a polorizing filter. It will allow for greater color saturation and it will filter out noise or scattered light. It will remove reflected light thereby enhancing the colors of leaves, rocks, roofs, etc, etc. Over water you can chose to filter or not depending upon the affect you wish. This filter coupled with an SLR gives you realtime saturation viewing, you can dial in the amount you want. When using it, it works best at an angle 90 degree to the sun. As to composition, I try to view scenes from strange or uncommon angles or aspects. this gives me an image that is uniquely mine and does not look like a just another post card. also try changing up on f stop for a more intimate affect or when shooting water, and use wide angle lenses for close-ups. You can try subtle filtering that enhance the scene, but I stay away from filters that dominate or radically change the view. I shoot hundreds and maybe one is a wall hanger, but what a wall hanger it is. Find one camera you like, one film you like and shoot like there ain't no tomorrow. You will be pleasantly astounded some day while going through your thousands pictures.

I'd want the pictures for memories... but I'm with you on traveling light. A digital camera might be just what you need. You can get some nice closeups with some of them, plus the wider angle shots, and they're smaller and lighter than an SLR -- go to a good camera shop to do some comparison and talk to folks who can help you figure out exactly what you want. You'll want some extra memory cards so you can snap as often as you want but the memory cards are very small and light so not an issue to carry around. I do the postcard thing, too, just for fun -- the photos are often better than what I can get -- but nothing replaces the photos you can take. Besides, the postcards are going to be of the tourist stuff, and some of the best things you'll see in Italy are scenes that you come across without expecting them. We're going to Tuscany next April and at least one camera is going with us, even if it means sacrificing a pair of shoes or something :)

I am totally into photography. I highly recommend a Canon brand SLR. The least expensive is the Rebel, and there are several models of the Rebel available, generally for around $600-700. I guarantee for the price they will blow you away with features, quality, etc. And a nice site to checkout is http://photo.net/ that has forums and other stuff. And http://www.dpreview.com/ which has digital camera reviews, unbiased.
A tip, very very important, in fact critical. You MUST use a tripod or the photos will not be the best they can be. Get the best tripod you can afford, I recommend a ballhead for the tripod head. And a cable release too, which you can get for probably less than $50.

Hey, thanks for the photo info. I've use my Canon A1 for quite a number of years and with lens can take just about any picture I want. Close up flower images turn out great. The only problem is finding a shop which develops the film.

I recall you saying that you have a problem with moles/gophers. I have problems with snails, so I looked it up in Sunset Magazine. They show a planter box with gopher guard and I used the idea for a snail guard. See if it's something you can use.
