The problem with this Yamamoto business is that it tells most people nothing much. The modern Soft-Cane types will bloom from the newest cane/pseudobulb whilst older types bloom from the cane/pseudobulb that matured the previous year.

Jus looking at my nobile species orchid it has buds coming on the older cane/pseudobulb and it is growing in a shadehouse. (August- late winter here)
Just wondering if your orchid is out of sync. because you have it in a green-house. Nobile types do not like glass-houses here, so perhaps if you give details of your conditions the locals might give further insight.

Not all Nobiles act the same. I have Dend Dream 'Ace' which likes water year-round and is just beginning it's second flush of blooms this year. Last year it bloomed 3 times. 'Yamamoto' type Nobiles can act out of synch and also some like to be watered all year long,. I would check with them.

I don't believe you can phone them, I emailed them once and a week later got a very complete answer.

My greenhouse is nearly the same conditions as outside right now - it is summer in Michigan. I built the greenhouse where the shade house was, and now need to finish it and get a shade house built that will keep pots out of the ferocious winds we sometimes get. That being said, I think my Den is in sync with where it should be- I will stop fertilizing at the end of this month and let it cool its jets outside all fall to get blooms to set. But I was expecting some new canes by now. I have one friend in my orchid club who does very well with these ... I'll make sure to talk to her when our meetings resume in September.

There is all kinds of information there. Please pay attention to when to stop using fertilizer in order to get the best blooms and the cooling down period.

I re-looked at the discussion you suggested, Arthur (found it in my initial search before posting my question) and I think I found the answer. It looks like new growths (meaning canes, I hope) appear at the same time as the blossoms. And that means that when I bought the plant it had all the new (cane) growth for the year it was going to get. I had taken the term 'new growth' to mean root growth. I hope that is the case, as all the postings and websites I have looked at concentrate on getting the plants to bloom. I am not worried about blooming right now- I just want to insure that the plant is growing as robustly throughout the summer as I can urge it to do. I'll worry about blooms in a month or two when it is time for hardening off. Anyway, thanks for all the help and encouragement.

I agree with bob8, check out the Yamamoto site, it's chock full of information. He recommends 25 days of cool night temps for good blooming. Getting the plants to bloom is equivalent to and the epitomy of good growing.

Lisa, new growth is also refering to the cains. If you want to get a good flowering in the winter you need to stop using fertilizer at the start or no later than the 15th of August until it blooms. Too much fertilizer in this time period will promote keikies and not flowers.
