Comments (3)Yes, I have one around my pond. Lost 2 fish before I got one. They work well but not if you have pets and plan to leave it on 24/7. Birds will also trigger it - which you may not want if you're trying to attract them. And I also agree that if you forget, you'll be squirted too - and anyone else who crosses the path. I only turn mine on at night and early morning. I don't know how your bulbs are planted, but if they're in a grouping, I've found that fencing does help somewhat with squirrels. I'm sure the bulb growers told you to just not plant tulips if you have a big squirrel problem. Plant daffodils, crocus, hyacinth or other bulbs that squirrels avoid. That's what I did and it's really the easiest solution....See Moredoes garlic repel animals?
Comments (5)planatus - we are in New Mexico, at the base of the mountains. Part of the reason we live here is because of the wildness which includes wild animals - bears, bobcats, coyotes, deer, many species of birds and unfortunately rabbits, pack rats and snakes. So getting rid of the rabbits is not an option. The best I can hope for is to keep them out of the walled garden. We don't grow many vegetables because it's a lost cause. If it turns out that garlic repels rabbits, I may try to distribute it around the beds just to deter them. I've put spiky branches around the garlic chives and we have a fence around the garlic crop. Baby rabbits have started to appear everywhere so we'll see if the garlic stays safe. Cheryl...See MoreSkydd animal repellent
Comments (2)There was a similar discussion not long ago, under the thread title squirrels stripping bark -- what is the active ingredient in "Skydd" ? The description on the stuff I'm using says that it takes some time for the animals to kick the habit -- i.e. develop an instinctive reaction to avoid biting the plants because of the bitter taste. So presumably there will still be some small amount of damage before this happens -- but I would think that the more trees you treat, the sooner your local varmints will get the message.......See MoreAnimal Varmint (Deer, etc.) Repellent Devices?
Comments (10)No doubt fence can work best when done properly. A few years back I looked into the cost of fencing in a 20x20ft area and it was about $300 not including my time and labor. Not to mention in this soil for every fence post I would certainly hit a rock, some are huge. That was the reason I didn't ask about fencing. With that in mind I decided to try one of those sprinkler motion sense things since I was going on vacation I thought it's a 2-fer-1. And it did work with 2 caveats. It would turn the sprinkler on when direct sun hit it. I tried turning it around then it seemed like it was the heat of the day setting it off. But it would go on for no reason when there was nothing moving or flying thru the garden. It stayed in use until the water company called and sent me a letter - they thought I had a water leak. No leak and caveat #2 - the bill was $300. Not worth it for tomatoes. So that came down and never went back up. I then tried using some old 4ft fencing by laying it down on the path they were coming down. Deer don't like things on their feet. Yea, I do realize they could jump over it or go around another way but that also worked for awhile too. Now its a cat n mouse game so I thought I'd try something else but now realize even if noise did work they would prob get used to that too. While scents may be something else for me to try this has been the most rainy summer in recent memory. In fact, it is pouring buckets now for the 2nd time this hour. So back to the farmers market....See Morebsquared18
