My very first pond - many pictures

Hi everyone.

I have never posted on this forum before. But Ive just looked at all your posts with pictures of your gorgeous ponds over the last few days, so I wanted to pay something back by showing you my new and very first pond.

We buildt it last week and I just finished planting it up yesterday.

I am in Denmark, Europe, so very far from all of you, but I think we gardeners/ponderers are very alike all over the world.

My pond is only very small, a premade 132 gallon (500 L)

I know I havent done a very good job of hiding the edges. Ive planted lots of plants around the edge, so Im hoping they will hide the black edges over time.

Sorry that many of the plants look very droopy still, but I dug them up from all over my garden and divided them to cover the ground fast.

Im also not so happy with my stream. Ive used a liner with pebbles glued on, but it looks a bit artificial. Ive tried to place more pebbles on it, but they get washed down :-D Im leaving it like this for nowÂ maybe till I find some bigger pebbles.

I have a pump and a pressure filter with UV-filter and Im hoping along with all the plants it will keep my water nice. Ive been told its more or less impossible to not have string-algea so I will just have to clear those out by hand.

I donÂt have any fish in it. I have 4 bunnies and two doggies, so for now I have enough pets, but who knows. Im really hoping to have frogs along the way. And my wild birds already love it. The blackbirds bath by the low end beneath the stream, and Ive had up to 5 sparrows bathing in the stream at once.

I appreciate any critisism, good or bad, as all this is very new to meÂ and very exciting. I see myself with a bigger pond in some years. This was all the space I had available at the moment.

Hi again.

I just wanted to add that the bare path-like bit to the right of the front of the pond edged with rocks is there on purpose, so the dogs can drink from the pond.

And the piece of wood on the top of the stream is for the birdies to sit on.

And lastly, I havent tried to hide my filter yet, as Im not so familiar with cleaning it yet, and I wanted it with easy access. Im thinking Ill maybe put a willow basket upside down on it to hide it.

I think you've done a wonderful job. I like the transition from stream to pond.

I can see what you mean about the pebble liner for the stream. I'm sure you'll figure out a way to make it look more natural.

I love your curly rush. Mine survived the winter, but just barely and has just a few tiny sprigs sticking out.

Xman... you have done an amazing job! Beautiful pond, waterway and landscaping! I especially love the round stones in the waterway; it gives a lovely touch of color! Your plant choices are lovely. The contrasting textures and colors work so well and I love the pruned Juniper! As far as pondscaping goes the plants you mentioned above would work well! For some added variation and texture you might consider putting a Dwarf Cattail in the lower pond as well. They only grow about 2 feet tall and have tiny little catkins. If you want to 'hide' the outside of the upper pond level you could try building a rock retaining wall, fill it with earth and plant some type of cascading plant to soften the edges of the wall and the pond. The goldfish are going to love it! I hope you will post more photos as your pond progresses! Wonderful job! Bren

Kalevi, Yes Koi are illegal in my state. I would have liked to have them until I found out I couldn't (North of the border in New South Wales I could). From my reading I'd need 2-3 feet depth minimum for the most part and preferrably somewhere around 10,000 Litres (2,500 Gallon) as a minimum to keep Koi happy. Effectively tripling the pond size would have also required considerable further negotiation with the wife also. On a side note one of the lillies had its first flower open today... the wife is suitably impressed.

Thanks again everyone for the very kind comments! As far as breaking the 11th commandment, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's pond, well, I'm very guilty of that one. It is all the pics on this site that I've examined with almost stalker-ish fanaticism that has given me so many ideas and inspiration! Okiee-I'm using a 20 watt Pondmaster UV light and a discontinued filter that I got for very, very cheap (the Hozelock trinamic). The filter is rated for ponds up to 3000 gallons with heavy koi loads. As my pond is only about 1200 gallons, I think it's doing its job of keeping the pond very clear! LOL I oversized the filter because I know that my pond is overstocked. Lisa - I am going to be adding a 500 gallon addition to the pond this fall to hopefully give the koi some extra breathing space to grow. But, I know that because of the small size of my pond - even with the addition - I will have to likely have to part with some of my koi eventually. A local cafe/pottery shop/artist's retreat has several ponds with koi. I might ask them if they want some of my koi if they outgrow the home I can give them. I'm also planning on hooking up with some other local water garden societies so I can meet people who may welcome some adopted koi. I just want to make sure they go to a good home someday. But, before I get ahead of myself, I probably should just try to get them through a Wisconsin winter!! LOL (see my post on overwintering koi under thick ice)

Hi and welcome! Gorgeous hoya you got there. It's called H. carnosa 'Krimson Princess'. Ok, let me try and answer the questions you had... "When should I repot it?" - You really don't need to repot it unless it's COMPLETELY rootbound (no soil left). Exotic Angel (the company where your hoya came from) uses a very peaty mix, so just make sure you let it dry out completely before watering. When I buy EA plants, the first thing I do is take the bottom saucer off...and I leave it off. This will allow it to dry out faster and allow more air to the roots. If you notice roots sticking out after removing the saucer, you'll need to repot. But in order to get blooms, you'll want to keep the hoya rootbound, so keep the pot as small as possible. "Should I put this outside or inside next to a window?" - If I lived in Florida I'd definitely keep it outside. Hoyas can happily live in temperatures much lower than 70 (depending on the hoya of course...and this is one that will do fine in that weather). You will have more chance of blooms if you keep it outside. But if you decide to keep it outside, just know that the sun may bleach out the leaves a little. "It says high light, morning direct sun should be okay?" - Yes, that should be fine. If you notice signs of sunburn just move it to a more shady spot. In the summer, I put a bunch of my hoyas, including the one you have, in direct morning sun...they do great. "Does it look like this plant is big/old enough to maybe flower this spring?" - That's not an easy prediction to make! Yes, it looks big enough to bloom, but it also depends on what conditions you have it in and on how stubborn it is! One thing you'll learn with hoyas is patience...getting blooms can take quite some time, so just enjoy the foliage until then. You'll know when it's close to blooming when you see a peduncle (the small stems that grow from the main stem...that's where the flowers will come from - and never cut those off, as it will continue to put out flowers from the same peduncles over and over again). "Is there something I need to do to keep this from staying variegated?" - This happens with mine as well, and I just leave it be. I guess if you don't want the all green coloring to take over (which is a possibility, although your's looks like most of the leaves are variegated), then cut off the green leaves. Good luck with your new hoya. And be forewarned that they are VERY addicting!! Gabi

What a lovely pond AND gardens! Pat yourself on the back! And don't worry, you'll be thinning plants out of there in no time - they grow so fast you won't be able to see the water.

Hi Hanne.

Welcome to the forum. I love your little pond, especially the stream. I like how you glued the pebbles to the liner. It gives it a natural look. How in the world did you get them to stick to the liner? I think you did an excellent job. Keep up the good work.

Thanks SO much for all your nice comments :-) Im blushing here in Denmark.

Jenny, the liner is premade with the tiny peebles glued on... what a job it would have been to glue them on :-D

I thought it was such a good idea. But it only came in a very narrow measure, so Ive had leaks constantly since I put it in.

Also after about a week it stained completely dark where the water runs, and it looked so yuck and dirty as the part above the waterstream stayed nice and fresh.

So in the end I filled the stream up completely with little stones. And it actually got to look really nice.

Then I placed some wooden edging behind the stream, cuz the sides of that little mountain were just too steep, as soil and peebles kept getting washed down with the rain.

I still had the problem with the leaking stream though, and soil being washed down into the pond at the front of the mountain.

And I didnt really build this to get more flowerbeds, as I have lots already... and I already thought my new pond was too small... giggle. So I eyed a nice size upper pond in this raised bed.

So I took it all apart... not the pond, just the upper part :-D

Im not sure how this works, but I guess I better start a new post right, so this doesnt get too heavy on pics?
