dens for a dollar or 2 at LOWES. help with care?

reposting as i messed up the title earlier [slept 3 hours]. Wonder if there is a way to modify delete a post after the fact.

anyway:

I

]bought a some dendrobiums at Lowes on sale for $ 1 or $ 2... go also cordyline and spathiphyllum for teh same price.

anyway I am new - I like the canes of the dendrobiums - feel it is more to my taste than phals.

anyway what kind of care do these dendrobiums need? are these phal types? do they need a dry and/or cold fall/winter rest?

they all come from costa farms.

Den Burana white

Den Pegasus pink

Den Hollywood.

I live in Brooklyn NY.

I put most of these outside on my 2nd fl fire escape - southern exposure but sun shielded a bit from fire escapes above and tree in backyard.

i put them under 2 banana plants that may shield the midday sun.

I put them in a plastic container with an inch of water /on top of 2 bricks

any care advice?

You will have to assume that they are warm growing hard cane types because i can only find one name on the RHS Register of orchid names. Think Hawaii climate and you might be on-track.
Might be OK outside there in summer but at some point you will have to bring them inside for winter.
Normal blooming season is Autumn/winter after the new pseudobulbs/canes have grown and matured as a slight cooling down initiates flowering.
You should be able to find complete cultivation notes that relate to your climate zone where you live. Generally, need Phalaenopsis conditions with a bit more light.

The 64 dollar question is....it it really Dendrobium phalaenopsis or a so called Phal type Dendrobium with some Dendrobium Phalaenopsis genes in its ancestry. Just to muddy the waters there are some that are not so difficult, others, that bloom in winter are difficult away from warmer climates. I hope that the silent auction figure was low because i suspect that the yellow bases on some of the older pseudobulbs mean that they are dead. As for care? A nicely heated glasshouse would be good, say 60F minimum at night with day temps in the 80sF Failing the NHGH perhaps standard indoor culture for Phalaenopsis might be the go with a little bit more light.

Yes, that was a tiny pot, it happens all too often at bigger stores I'm afraid. The temps in my closed off un-heated room will probably approach 40 degrees F most of the time. I might try to get it even colder by opening a window or something. I don't think its a good thing for it to come out of dormancy in Winter. That room has a busted window anyhow. I don't think the splotches are normal. I'm not sure how they got them, but I'd guess its the wrong amount of watering or some other kind of neglect along the way. I'm just hoping their Basjoos, if their not, I may end up with dead plants, and looming refunds. I agree, not only are they care-less with labels, their care-less with the care of the plants. I've watched them year after year, they let many plants just die if they don't sell. Also, those are click-able thumbnail pics up there, one don't have to strain their eyes on those little pics. Will

Not sure, thought it could be Blade or Manor, but then I read the article in the link below. Manor is expensive stuff. I had 2 services out. They are really expensive. One more will come out on Tuesday for a price. After that I may do it myself. I get the feeling from chats that they may even use Atrazine sometimes, like now, maybe since you can treat with that product in the winter. Image has to be used when the grass is growing. Colonial variation with 6 dormers. 9' ceilings throughout including basement. Open floor plan two story great room/kitchen/dining room. Master BR and laundry on Main Floor. Split-faced block, Hardiboard siding. 8/12 pitch with architectural 40-yr shingles. Upper mid-level finishes. Large porcelain tile, BR-111 Amendoim wood floor, 48" stainless steel double oven stove with custom 48" range hood, maple stair treads and railings with white balusters, maple fireplace hearth surround, custom mudroom lockers, geothermal HVAC including radiant floor in basement plus desuperheater, garage and bathroom tile floors, closed cell sprayfoam insulation, quality vinyl argon-filled casement windows. I bought some 99 c storage boxes at Home Depot - I can put 3 to 5 plant pots.
I put a couple of small bricks inside the box so the orchids are sitting on top of the brick inside the box. i fill the box with an inch of water to increase humidity. the 2 bricks keep the pots above the water line.

It is my first year i started gardening.

Anyway it is southern exposure but the sun is high in the sky and filtered by the fire escapes above my window. also the tree filters the light.

may have to give away one of my two bananas musa kru because they are growing fast and will no be able probably to keep everything inside in the winter although it is a shame because they provide shade from the direct sun.
will supplement with some 23 W CFL bulbs. wonder if in the fall / winter will have more direct light in my window when the leaves of the tree outside fall and the sun will be lower on the horizon.

anyway would direct sun damage the leaves of these dendrobiums [are these phal type?]?

Your set up looks good. You can leave them out until the nights go below 40 (at least I do). Keep them out as long as you can. Its been so cold in NY this summer, maybe we'll have a warm Fall. I give mine lots of sun, direct SW and they begin to spike toward end of August. You want the spikes to continue to grow, keep them close to your windows when you bring them in.

I find these Dens easy to flower if they get enough sun and warmth.
