Just wanted to update on the snowstorm tonight just in case our power goes out & I can't post tomorrow. The storm has already dumped close to a foot in my yard and it's coming down fast & furious at 11:30 p.m. It's supposed to go all night and til around noontime tomorrow. I've been watching the weather channel and it's crazy how much snow is coming out of the storm for such a widespread area. The wind is getting pretty strong up here and when I put on the spotlight the trees are bowing down with the weight of the snow. They are saying at higher elevations there will be the most amounts so I expect when I wake up in the morning I will be in for a shock. I notice that the Weather Channel focuses mostly on the metropolitan areas in their coverage. Those of us in tiny rural towns are getting huge amounts of snow. I see there are already some deaths related to the storm and I hope there will be no more. Jean, my husband works weekends so he will be at work tomorrow whether he wants to or not. He owns the local hardware store and also fixes power equipment so he was swamped by folks desperate to get their snowblowers fixed in time. Snow shovels were selling off the shelves...LOL. My son works the overnight shift at our local police department and when I talked to him a little while ago he said there are cars off the road everywhere. People just weren't expecting snow in October so they don't have their snowtires on yet. Everyone in the path of this NorEaster, please be careful! Celeste

drtomato, Yah, same thing here across the water (Wisconsin) We get 2 inches of rain which then freezes solid and then we get 6 inches of snow on top of it. I still have around 3 feet of snow/ice over the top of my garden. I don't start my seeds until April, but it would be nice if I got some sign that summer was actually coming before starting them. It's interesting you mentioned Tiny Tim. I started some about a month ago because I was bored and I'd heard they can be grown as indoor plants, since they only get to 12-18 inches high. They're about 3-4 inches high now. Are you going to plant them outside, or are they for hanging pots or something like that? Mike

I live in Long Island, which, while extremely built up with homes as a "suburb" for New York City, still has lots of trees and rural areas. Every year I watch the changing of the seasons. We get a hurricane every few years (this September it was "Irene") which always bring winds and lots of downed trees and limbs. I conisider it Mother Nature's way of "pruning". In my town, if you lose a tree, and report it to the town, they will replace it. Of course that applies only to main trees along the street, not fruit trees in your yard. I didn't lose any trees to Irene, but I did have a lot of branches down. Cost me $225 to have a landscape clean-up done. And our electric was out for two days. But seems we fared a lot better this most recent storm. Long Island "dodged the bullet". I'm sorry for Bulldinkie and anyone who lost trees they loved.

It's exhausting! DD is on her own for the first time this winter and is having a hard time keeping up with the snow. Her little Honda keeps getting buried by plows in her neighborhood, and one of the other tenants doesn't shovel his space. Between that and the breeze whipping through her 100 year old apartment, she's pretty dejected. DH is going to stop by there on his way home from NH next week and see if he can help clear her spot a little better. DS and I are alone for this storm. He's going to have to at least get the walks shoveled, which he's going to hate but will do. If it is really bad I will find someone to help out. I hate worrying about it.
