For Di - Sidebar to Journal, Aug 8

Di, I can only offer sympathy for the financial difficulties you and Jimmy are going through right now. Your personal sense of honor allows you both only certain paths to resolve the situation and I respect and admire that.

Regarding the antidepressants and weight gain, however, I can speak from thirteen years (so far) of personal experience. Yes, most of them will increase your appetite, and some are worse than others. I was on one a couple years ago that made me feel constantly hungry, even though I was actually full enough to be nauseated.

There's a medicine that works as an enhancement to the antidepressants that can help. Although its primary function is otherwise, it also works as a mood stabilizer, and an additional side effect is appetite suppression. I was leery of taking an additional med to counteract a side effect of a med I was already taking, but for me, it was a godsend. It's called Topamax and it's marketed as a migraine blocker, but it's helped me stop gaining weight and it seems to have helped stop my own downward spiral into darkness (I won't bore you with the ugly details). By happy coincidence, I also get fewer headaches, even though I was never diagnosed with migraines.

I urge you to talk to your doctor, Di. This additional pain has a solution. You don't need to deal with it on top of everything else. Don't let it be one more thing to bow your back and bend your spirit.

In addition to hugs and sunflowers, I'm sending wishes for a bright ray of sunshine, tons of beautiful fall blooms to repay your faith and hard work in the seemingly hopeless task of watering each of the 702 plants during these hot and humid days when nothing wants to bloom and some small bit of senseless beauty to appear in your and Jimmy's lives just because.
