Name That Plant!

Who can name this plant, pls.?

A couple of years ago, I bought two bee balm plants. I planted them in my front flower garden. I even put the ID makers in the ground in front of them, like I do all my flowers. This has come up for the past two years. The other one I pulled out. I kept this one growing hoping it would flower and I'd be able to ID it. It hasn't flowered yet, and my sister says it isn't bee balm. I planted *something* in this spot, but what is it?

Sorry the photo is dark. I took it at night. I kept forgetting to take a photo of it during the day.

The yellow you see in the background is not part of this plant.

I just remembered....my husband weed wacked this down the first year, right down to almost nothing. This has come up the past two years.

Might be a weedy wild Aster.
It future it may help with ID's to know your state or USDA zone.

I suspect that may be more myth than fact, although years ago before "store bought" toys were common that might have been true :-) I doubt many would consider using a plant berry as part of a homemade toy now. More berries are poisonous than those that are not. The sources I have indicate the common name came about because the berries resemble the eyes used in old fashioned china dolls - again, long since a thing of the past unless you are an antique collector. It is a very cool plant but perhaps one to avoid if you have curious small children in your garden.

And to be exact the expert don't identify plants from just a leaf. and foolish to do so. I don't name plants this is a very old plant and variable. You have old names listed that have been drooped due to imprper nominclature. Some of these are are interchangable. These are acceptable names for that plant at this time Crassula Crassula ovata (Mill) argentea Thumb. C.portulacea Lam. C. obliqua Sholand Type Cape in Rondebossch Masson s.n. (BM, holo!) C. articulata Zuccccagbu Stcios nom nud C. nitida C. subspecies arborescens with the following varieties C subsp. undulatifolia and there many be many varieties or forms, There is a full page of descriptions on the species. There is no description of each leaf. *Flora of Southern Africa. Gordon Rowley book on the species may be of help, the pictures are great. Vera Higgis, may be of some help, this book set me back 10 years. Frankly I think you are beating a dead bush, I have just finished looking in 5 books, and I certainly cannot give you a positive name on any Crassua ovata obliqua or Crassula ovata 'Blue Bird' perhaps Gordon Rowley has written the latest book on Crassula if not the only one. There is a "name this plant" forum, you might want to put this there also. #1 looks like daylilies #2 looks like Solanum, maybe S. dulcamara (nightshade vine.) Handling this plant makes me itchy, you might want to wear gloves/sleeves to pull it up. Unfortunately perennial. #3 bulb lilies of some type. #4 ? #5 ? looks like some kind of critter may have been eating the leaves, could be something that will pass without action, seasonal. Those who know what it is probably know what's going on with the leaves.

In some areas, lucky only if you never decide you want to get rid of it. This is a tough one to remove completely from a garden in CA. And it makes the invasive plants list, too. Not saying it does not have its place and uses, but be aware if you are in a location where this plant can cause problems.

Oops. Sorry, I thought it automatically showed my zone. I'm in Michigan. Zone 5. I took a daytime photo this morning and I'll upload it in a few minutes.

I second wild Aster - Aster aricoides
Got a few in my garden too. I just pull out extras, keeping a few. Love the flowers. It blooms late when most others are gone.

Will it ever bloom? It's been 2 years and not one single bloom on it. I don't even see any buds or anything to make a flower. I'll take a close up of the leaves.

I took some more photos. I am now convinced this was not what I planted. I thought I'd seen these in other parts of my yard, and sure enough, I found one on the side of the fence.

This is a close up of the first one.

Here is an Aster that I planted. I still have the label in the ground behind it. You can see it peeking through. It's not near the one in question.

And here is another one I found along the fence line. This is a weed. It wasn't here last year. The one in question has been there at least 2 yrs and has never bloomed.

So, it will get yanked tonight and something else put in it's place. Honestly, I'm glad to yank it. I have been waiting 2 yrs for any kind of bloom, but nothing. I would have kept it if it had flowered.

Yank it out. :-) I would.

If it were a wild aster, the leaves would be different from your aster. Your aster looks like an Aster novi-belgii, not a New England aster - a close relative to Aster ericoides - the wild and weedy aster in my picture..

I original thought aster. I am pretty sure I saw some of that yesterday. I do not know the name though. It is blooming in VA right now with a purple flower. If you are north of me, still have it and it is not blooming yet then I would give it another month.
